Longtime SPU Photographer Dies

James “Jimi" Lott, 52, was found dead July 5, 2005, in Wenatchee. His death was ruled a suicide. Jimi was an award-winning photographer for Seattle Pacific University and for The Seattle Times. His work for Seattle Pacific spanned nearly 20 years, and his photos included students, faculty, alumni, and others for many SPU publications, including Response magazine. He won numerous awards through Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) competitions. He worked for The Seattle Times from 1984 to 2004, also winning many awards, including the Reid Blackburn Memorial Award for outstanding achievement in feature photography over four consecutive years. Before coming to Seattle, he was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in spot-news photography while at The Spokesman-Review. Jimi is survived by his son, stepfather, a sister, a grandniece, an ex-wife, and many friends at SPU and The Seattle Times. Pick Up Your Free Bus Pass

The 2005-06 Metro FlexPasses have arrived. The Metro FlexPass is free to all full-time (32 hrs/wk or more) regular employees of SPU during their employment period. The FlexPass is valid on any Metro Transit bus route as well as the Sounder train, and it can also be used for paying monthly Vanpool or Vanshare dues. To pick up a pass, bring your employee ID card to the Safety and Security Office, 601 West Emerson Street, and fill out an 0506 CTR Form and FlexPass Agreement. Let Us Know About Your Campus Events for 2005-06

Twice a year, the Office of University Communications publishes a community events brochure titled “Engage," highlighting a sampling of campus events of interest to the public. Previous brochures have invited neighbors to guest lectures, symposia, concerts, athletic events, gallery showings, theatre productions, etc. This brochure is sent to more than 35,000 alumni, friends, and Seattle neighbors. We are now collecting event information for the 2005-06 academic year, especially for Autumn and Winter Quarters. If you are planning an event of interest to the public, please forward the information to Tracy Norlen in University Communications at tcnorlen@spu.edu. Corner Place Market, Monday-Thursday, 7:45 a.m.-6 p.m., Friday, 7:45 a.m.–4 p.m.
Subway in the Corner Place Market, Monday-Friday, open until 2 p.m.
Falcons' Landing is closed all summer.




SPU Night at the Mariners on September 13

Join SPU faculty, staff, students, alums, friends, and family at Safeco Field on Tuesday, September 13, to watch the Seattle Mariners play the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $10 each, and checks can be made payable to SPU. The deadline to order tickets is Thursday, August 11. However, tickets usually sell out before the order deadline date. To purchase tickets, contact Julia Weir in University Communications, Suite 116, at (206) 281-2051 or julia@spu.edu.




Summer Institute for Artists, Writers

The Glen Workshop, sponsored by Image: A Journal of Art and Religion, is an innovative and enriching program for artists and writers combining the best elements of a workshop, arts festival, and conference. The workshop will be held July 31–August 7 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Classes at “The Glen" are led by nationally known authors and artists. Small class sizes allow the faculty to pay close attention to each participant -- whether he or she is a beginner or well advanced in his or her craft. The Glen is also an illuminating conference on the relationship between art and religious faith, where participants practice and strengthen their craft and vision in community. Now published at SPU, Image is one of America's leading literary and arts journals, and explores the relationship between Judeo-Christian faith and art. Farewell for Jeanette Weber on July 22

After more than 10 years of expert and dedicated service to our employees and benefits programs, Jeanette Weber is leaving SPU. A farewell open house will be held in the Office of Human Resources on Friday, July 22, from 2-4 p.m. This will be an informal time for all to drop-in and say goodbye, share a word of thanks, or wish her well in her new sewing enterprise.




Kelly Serves on Panel at Writers Association

Clint Kelly, University Communications specialist, was both a panelist and panel facilitator at the 50th anniversary conference of the Pacific Northwest Writers Association in SeaTac, Washington. At the event, Clint moderated a panel called "Turning Issues Into Inspiration" with novelists Bette Nordberg and Janet Carey. Discussed was the literary power of plot structured around major issues of the day including AIDS, domestic abuse, near-death experience, and genocide. He was also a panelist for "Writing and Selling Freelance Articles" with Jim Molnar, former Seattle Times travel writer, and Ron Kovach, senior editor of The Writer magazine.
