|President's Recognition Convocation|
The President's Recognition Convocation will be held Tuesday, May 3, in Brougham Pavilion 9:30-10:30 a.m. Recognitions will include Years-of-Service Awards, Professor of the Year Award, Staff Members of the Year Awards, and the President's Awards for Excellence. All campus offices will be closed for this event. Plan to come and celebrate!
|Autumn Quarter Registration|
Registration for Autumn Quarter is coming soon. All continuing students have been
assigned an appointment time, and have been notified via email. Students not
admitted to a major will be seeking to meet with their faculty advisor prior to
their appointment time. Autumn registration for currently admitted undergraduate
students begins Monday, May 16. Autumn registration for graduate students begins
on Monday, May 23. If you have questions, contact Student Academic Services at (

|Get in Shape for Summer|
Senior exercise science majors are available on a limited basis to provide a variety of physical fitness and exercise services. These can be as simple as the assessment of a single component of fitness or instruction for a specific exercise. You can also get a complete fitness assessment and exercise prescription, or have a personal trainer for a period of time. If you are interested, call (206) 281-2081 and give the receptionist the information needed to match you with an appropriate student.
|Order Commencement Regalia by April 29|
Now is the time to order regalia for the coming end-of-year ceremonies, including graduation. If you rent regalia through the SPU Bookstore, you will be able to keep it for all graduation ceremonies. Place your order by stopping by the Bookstore and picking up a form.
|Free Satellite Teleconference on Income Plans|
"Sleep Well" Income Plans, a free satellite teleconference on April 28, will be
shown live 9:45-11:15 a.m. in the Cascade Conference Room in Upper Gwinn. SPU is one of two host sites in Washington state for this exciting live presentation. You are invited to attend and learn new ways of ensuring your family's financial future while giving to the charities of your choice. Topics to be covered include the secure payouts and tax benefits of a gift annuity, the benefits of creating a charitable remainder trust, and the advantages of using appreciated stock, real estate, and other non-cash assets to fund a secure life income plan and provide for charity. |Student Employee Celebration on April 27|
The annual Student Employee Celebration is Wednesday, April 27, 3-4:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn. All supervisors along with student employees are encouraged to attend. Enjoy a special fondue bar, enter to win great door prizes, and hear the unique experiences of keynote speaker Dennis Madsen, former CEO of REI and SPU alumnus. Efforts of individual students (or groups of students) will be recognized throughout the event. Submit a brief story about the work of one or more of your student employees online.
|Tell Your Students About “Etiquette Evening"|
Encourage students to register for the upcoming “Etiquette Evening" on Thursday, April 28, 7-9 p.m. in Upper Gwinn. Students will enjoy an elegant dessert and learn the basics of social and professional etiquette. They'll learn how to handle professional lunches or networking events, how to confidently dress for interviews, what to do with all those forks at the table, and more. Space is limited. |Send in Your Leadership Award Nominations|
Forms are now available to nominate a student, student group, or staff member to receive recognition for their work on campus during the 2004-05 school year. Categories include Student Scholar of the Year, Student Group of the Year, Student Organization Advisor of the Year, and Student Event of the Year for Service-Oriented Program, Educational, and Entertainment. Awards will be presented at the Leadership Celebration at the end of May. Please take a moment to nominate someone or a group that deserves honor and celebration for their energy and hard work this year. |TIAA-CREF One-on-One Counseling Sessions|
TIAA-CREF will be on campus April 26 and 27 for one-on-one counseling sessions with an individual consultant. |Last Week to See “A Shayna Maidel"|
The SPU Theatre Department presents the play “A Shayna Maidel" by Barbara Lebow, April 28-30 in the E.E. Bach Theatre in McKinley Hall. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m., and there will be a matinee performance on April 30 at 2 p.m. The play, a haunting portrait of two sisters separated since the Holocaust and reunited 20 years later, looks at one divided family's experiences. Old barriers and grief give way to a renewed sense of hope that a better future can rise from the ashes of the past. The play is directed by adjunct faculty member and guest director Karen Lund. The set design is by SPU Professor of Theatre Don Yanik. Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for students and seniors. To reserve tickets, call the McKinley Theatre Box Office at (206) 281-2959.

|Rowley, Sink, and Stroh Publish Article|
The School of Education is pleased to announce that Bill Rowley, dean of the School of Education, Chris Sink, professor of education, and Heather Stroh, assistant researcher and data manager for SPU's Washington School Research Center, had their article titled “Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Programs Use of Guidance Curricula Materials: A Survey of National Trends" published in Professional School Counseling, the refereed journal of the American School Counselor Association. The article reports on their national study to determine what guidance curricula materials are used by school counselors in the United States, and the degree to which they are used to teach life skills in a variety of developmental domains. The research was funded by an SPU faculty research grant.
|McKenna Presents at Psychology Conference|
Rob McKenna, associate professor and chair of psychology, recently made a presentation at the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology's annual conference in Los Angeles, California. The presentation was titled "Differentiation of Self: A Systemic Approach to Leadership in Organizations" and was a part of a symposium on the integration of individual and organization development.
|Granger Selected for Who's Who Edition|
Theresa Granger, nursing instructor and doctoral student at the University of Colorado at Denver, Health Sciences Center, has been selected for inclusion in the ninth edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2005.
Who's Who Among America's Teachers is the one recognition program in the education field where the ultimate consumers of education–the students–have the opportunity and responsibility to honor the teachers who have most significantly impacted their lives. Because of the high caliber of students nominating them, the approximately 134,000 teachers featured in the current edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers are among our nation's best and most respected teachers.
|Woodward at Popular Culture National Meeting|
Professor of History Bill Woodward warmed up his recent Weter Faculty Award Lecture on the “American Promise" by presenting a portion of his analysis to the Popular Culture Association national meeting in San Diego, April 26-28. He was pleased to be joined by Nate Woodward (SPU ‘00), who presented a paper on "Injustice and Indifference in [the musical] ‘Parade:' Creating Meaning in Musical Theater."
|Collins Elected President of Seattle Flute Society|
Shelley Collins, adjunct music faculty member, was recently elected for her third term as president of the Seattle Flute Society. In April, she organized the Seattle Flute Festival, a music conference that brought more than 300 flutists to Town Hall for two days of workshops, master classes, and performances. The SPU Flute Ensemble also performed at the festival.

Denise Daniels, associate professor of management in the School of Business and Economics, and her husband, Craig Barwell, are proud to announce the birth of their son, Zachary Daniel Barwell. Zachary was born March 29 at 10:47 p.m., tipping the scales at 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and 20.5 inches. He joins siblings Joshua (7), Samara (6), and Danica (2). Welcome, Zachary!
