Offices Closed for Ivy Cutting on June 11

Hundreds of graduating students and SPU faculty members don their academic garb and assemble in Tiffany Loop for SPU's annual Ivy Cutting ceremony on Friday, June 11, at 9:30 a.m. After a brief formal ceremony, each graduate receives a sprig of ivy. The ceremony, a part of SPU graduation rites since 1922, represents both the student's tie to SPU and the independence that comes with graduation. Light refreshments follow for graduates, parents and faculty in Tiffany Loop. SPU offices will be closed from 9:15-10:30 a.m.




Graduate Hooding Ceremony on June 11

Graduating master's degree students are invited to the Graduate Hooding Ceremony on Friday, June 11, at 8:45 a.m. in Martin Square. Program directors and deans will hood their students. The students will then process with the faculty and participate in the Ivy Cutting ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Tiffany Loop.




Baccalaureate Service on June 11

The annual Baccalaureate service, an informal worship time shared by graduates and their families, friends and professors, will be held Friday, June 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Royal Brougham Pavilion. Special music is included and a reception follows in Upper Gwinn Commons. This event does not require tickets and is open to all.

SPU Living Well Initiative June 17

The SPU Living Well Initiative will sponsor its first conference titled “Meeting the Mental Health Needs of College-Aged Youth and their Families" on Thursday, June 17, from 9 a.m.–12 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. The keynote speaker for the morning will be Dr. Karen Schepp from the University of Washington. The program will also feature a panel presentation focused on community based services for youth and their families. Started in 2002, the SPU Living Well Initiative is a multidisciplinary educational program addressing the needs of persons and families affected by severe and persistent mental health conditions. “Service-Learning and Civic Engagement" Conference

Washington Campus Compact (WACC), a coalition of college and university presidents, is sponsoring two professional development programs this summer. “Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Institute" will be held July 28-29, and “Self-Reflection and Renewal Activity" will be held July 29-30. Both will be at the Sleeping Lady Mountain Retreat in Leavenworth, Washington. The Institute will feature two tracks; “Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Dialogues and Workshops" for intermediate to advanced practitioners and facilitated by nationally recognized expert Nadinne Cruz, and “Introduction to Service-Learning and Sustainable Partnerships," facilitated by Erin Swezey (WACC) and Rachel Vaughn (Community Campus Partnerships for Health). Both tracks are designed for faculty, staff, administrators and community partners. The “Self-Reflection and Renewal Activity" is a one-and-a-half day program, also facilitated by Nadinne Cruz, designed to provide a relaxing, professionally facilitated environment to support participants in reflecting on their previous year's work and engaging in professional and personal renewal. Staff Forum on June 16

The next SPU Staff Forum is Wednesday, June 16, from 9-10:30 a.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Doug Thorpe, associate professor of English and spiritual director in the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia, will speak on the topic “Labour Well the Minute Particulars: Joy, Attention and the Art of Spiritual Direction." He will explore some of the struggles we have with work – finding time for what matters and finding the spirit in the midst of the matters of our daily labors. He will also look at ways our work invites such attention and ways that it doesn't. Beverages and pastries will be provided.

Professors Attend ROTC Ceremony

History professors Rod Stiling (capt., U.S. Naval Reserve, ret.) and Bill Woodward (lt. col., Army National Guard, ret.) represented SPU at the Joint Service Award Ceremony held by the combined ROTC detachments at the University of Washington on May 27. They were able to personally congratulate and thank the five SPU students recognized during the program–Jason Siler, Adam Suyat, Bryant Webber, Adam Alm and Glendon Bute. SPU enjoys a “cross-town" relationship with the Army and Air Reserve Office Training Corps detachments at the University of Washington. This allows aspiring officers to study at SPU while enrolled in ROTC. Bill reports, “After the ceremony, the Air Force commandant, echoing comments made earlier this year by his Army counterpart, told me how SPU students are consistently stellar." Bill goes on to note, “And the objective record over the last decade or so indicates that our students, few as they are, have made a decisive contribution to both UW officer preparation programs, which rank among the best in the nation."




Eigenbrood's Manuscript Published

Rick Eigenbrood, director of doctoral studies and graduate programs in the School of Education, recently had his manuscript titled "Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Requirements for Children with Disabilities in Faith-Based Schools: Implications for Practice" published in the Journal of Disability Policy Studies. The article discusses the goal of maximizing the benefits of the IDEA for children with disabilities in private schools.

An original recipe by junior Kelsie Wilson appears in the June issue of Cooking Light magazine. In an accompanying article, Kelsie explains how she recreated a curried chicken with mango chutney dish she had a restaurant.
