Re: Influenza A H1N1 (Swine Flu) Update

Date: May 1, 2009

A few suspected cases of Influenza A H1N1 (swine flu) have been reported on college campuses. Today, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) provided recommendations for university campuses. These recommendations are consistent with the information provided by earlier emails to the campus.

An additional recommendation is that campus health centers track influenzalike illness among the campus community. This data will allow us to track the sources of virus and assist in preventative measures. We ask that if you have symptoms of influenza (a fever and a cough, sore throat, lethargy, aches, or lack of appetite) that you report this information via email to Jean Brown, director of the Student Health Center at jbrown@spu.edu or 206-281-2231; or Jeff Jordan, associate vice president, dean of student life at jordaj2@spu.edu or 206-281-2481.

In regards to preventing influenza, travel precautions are provided by the CDC. We recommend that you evaluate your decision to travel to any area with confirmed or suspected cases of Influenza A H1N1.

However, if you travel to locations that have confirmed or suspected cases of this virus or come into close contact with people who exhibit the symptoms listed above, we request that you report this travel to one of us before returning to campus. We may ask/require that you stay away from campus for a period of time.
