Instructional Responsibilities & Services

CLASS LISTS
You will receive a first-day and fifth-day roster of students registered for your class. Rosters will be placed in your mailbox. Please take attendance on the days you receive them. If there are students in the class who do not appear on the roster, list their names and send them to register immediately.

CLASS SYLLABI
The purpose of the syllabus is to provide clear communication of the goals and direction of the course and to formalize communication between the instructor and students in regard to academic and logistical expectations. This essential component to the academic experience, if clearly and carefully written, will enable the University to support the adjunct faculty if a concern or dispute arises from the participants. Please provide a copy of your syllabus to the office.

A course syllabus is a contract with students and must include:

  • course title, number, quarter, dates, location and number of credits;
  • your name, telephone number and office hours;
  • required and recommended textbooks and resources;
  • evaluation procedures and grading criteria (critical component);
  • course assignments and expectations; and
  • dates for submission of final course requirements and date of final exam.

TEXTBOOKS
Textbooks need to be ordered at the Bookstore in time for them to be in stock before the quarter begins. For information regarding ordering procedures, see the administrative assistant.

GRADING POLICIES
Please be aware that student grades cannot be posted publicly for identification through social security numbers. This is illegal. You may, however, use a pre-selected code word or number. Likewise, neither papers nor tests may be left out publicly. You may wish to collect a self-addressed/stamped envelope from each student for returning final tests/papers, or you may leave papers with the administrative assistant for student pick up. The student has up to 3 weeks into the next quarter to pick these up. Any papers left at the end of the 3rd week will be tossed.

You will receive an "Official Grade Roster" in your mailbox before finals begin. Please record your final grades on it and return to SAS (Student Academic Records) in Demaray Hall. If you prefer, you may submit grades via the web.

Grades are usually due to SAS within a week of the last day of finals (by 4:30 pm). See the University Calendar in the Time Schedule for specific dates. You may fax your grade report to SAS at (206) 281-2669 with the original to follow via the mail. It is the faculty member's responsibility to contact students if grades are turned in past the deadline. Meeting the deadline is essential for providing students with timely grade reports and official transcripts.

Incompletes
Before granting an incomplete, check with the department chair. If given approval, student needs to initiate form. Forms are available in the PE office.
