Once Your Class Gets Started...

CLASS LISTS
You will receive a first-day and a fifth-day roster of students registered for your class. Rosters will be placed in your mailbox. Please take attendance on the days you receive them. If there are students in the class not appearing on the roster, list their names and send them to register immediately. If someone does not appear by the fifth day, cross his or her name off the list. In either case, submit the roster to the office of Student Academic Services (SAS). Any questions regarding graduate courses and registration should be directed to Debbie Wysomierski, Associate Graduate Director, Office #213, (206) 281-2753 or djwysom@spu.edu.

TEACHING HINTS
Useful teaching hints can be found in the SPU General Adjunct Handbook by clicking here and here.

EXAMS
Autumn Quarter 2003 Final Exams December 8 - 10
Winter Quarter 2004 Final Exams March 15 -17
Spring Quarter 2004 Final Exams June 8 - 10

Details of the exam schedule are listed in the University Time Schedule. Please follow this schedule. Please ask the SBE Receptionist if you need assistance in determining the final exam schedule for your class.

SBE GRADING POLICIES
Undergraduate: The mean course grade should approach these guideline figures:

Mean Grade Course level
2.8 - 3.0 1000 and 2000 courses
2.9 - 3.1 3000 and 4000 courses required of all majors
3.0 - 3.2 4000 concentration & electives

Graduate: The mean course grade should be 3.4.

This policy discourages grade inflation and promotes equity/fairness in that all professors are giving roughly the same grades. The graduate mean is similar to that of many graduate programs, including that of the University of Washington. Please click here for a more detailed description of the meaning of each grade and for a description of the University's policies on incompletes.

Please be aware that student grades cannot be posted publicly for identification through social security numbers. This is illegal. You may, however, use a pre-selected code-word or number. Likewise, neither papers nor tests may be left out publicly. You may leave graded papers, exams, etc. at the SBE reception desk. These items will be filed and may easily be picked up by students during regular SBE office hours. You may also wish to collect a self-addressed/stamped envelope from each student for returning final tests/papers.

You will receive an "Official Grade Roster" in your mailbox before finals begin. Please record your final grades on it and return to SAS (Student Academic Records) in Demaray Hall. Alternatively, grades can be submitted online through Banner.

Grades are due to SAS by 4:30pm Friday, December 19, 2003 for Autumn quarter; Thursday, March 25, 2004 for Winter quarter; and Monday, June 21, 2004 for Spring quarter. You may fax your grade report to SAS at (206) 281-2669 with the original to follow in the mail. It is the faculty member's responsibility to contact students if grades are submitted after the deadline. Meeting deadlines is essential for providing students with timely grade reports and official transcripts. (Contact Gary Karns, Associate Dean, (206) 281-2948 or gkarns@spu.edu, if you have questions regarding grades or SBE grading standards.)

GRADE CHANGES
Except in cases of clerical error, no instructor may change a grade that he/she has submitted to Student Academic Services. Instructors may not allow students to complete extra work in order to boost their original grade. Grade changes must be corrected no later than one quarter following the quarter the original grade was assigned. Instructors must submit in writing the grade correction and an explanation to Student Academic Services. Change of Grade forms are available from Student Academic Services or SBE's office administrator. If a student registers for a Pass/No Credit (P/NC) option, they may petition to change to a letter grade.

PROCEDURES FOR INSTRUCTOR EVALUATION
An important tool used to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of all courses and events is the feedback we receive from course evaluations. Unless otherwise prearranged, instructors are required to distribute, collect and return course evaluation forms provided by Seattle Pacific University. These forms will be placed in your mailbox one to two weeks before the end of the quarter. In order to obtain objective responses, one student should be appointed to collect and return the completed forms in a sealed envelope provided. A copy of the results will be sent to the instructor and filed with SBE.
