Getting Your Class Organized

TEXTBOOK ORDERS
Textbooks need to be ordered well before the start of the quarter. Orders not received in time will not be guaranteed to arrive prior to the first class. For specific date information, please call the SPU Bookstore at (206) 281-2172 or visit the Bookstore web site.
Generally, deadlines for textbook orders follow these dates:

Fall Quarter orders - May 15
Winter Quarter orders - October 15
Spring Quarter orders - January 15
Summer Quarter orders - April 1

Publishers will provide a desk copy of the textbook used in the classroom. See the SBE Office Assistant to get a desk copy request form.

SYLLABUS
The importance of a complete course syllabus cannot be stressed enough, especially for those students whose first language is not English. The purpose of the syllabus is to provide clear communication about the goals and direction of the course and to formalize communication between the instructor and students in regard to academic and logistical expectations. This essential component to the academic experience, if clearly and carefully written, will enable the University to support the adjunct faculty if a concern or dispute arises from the participants. Click here for a copy of the model syllabus guidelines for SBE courses.

A course syllabus is a contract with students and must include:

  • Seattle Pacific University, School of Business and Economics
  • Course name, number and quarter
  • Instructor name and phone number(s)
  • Classroom location, class day and time
  • Course objectives
  • Name of text and any additional sources for readings
  • Grading criteria (very important)
  • Assignments/expectations
  • Plan of study - by topic (quarter schedule) This should include dates for assignments and exam dates.
  • Reading Assignments
  • Office Hours/Availability

Instructors are also encouraged to include their policy on academic misconduct and their policy on returning papers and exams to students. Please submit one electronic copy of your syllabus to Dr. Dick Sleight (sl8@spu.edu) no later than 3 days prior to the start of the quarter. We do have additional sample syllabi available for your reference.

HANDOUTS
University-funded course handouts during a quarter are permissible, provided the total does not exceed ten pages, excluding tests and quizzes. First-time taught courses are exempt. Additional University printed secondary teaching aids such as study guides, handbooks, workbooks, manuals, lecture notes, extended bibliographies, etc. must be marketed to students through the Bookstore for all courses with expected enrollment of fifteen or better. Materials for courses with expected enrollment of less than fifteen should be marketed through the school office.

COPY MACHINE/KEY CODES
A copy machine is located in the SBE workroom. (See the SBE Office Assistant for the adjunct code for the copy machine) Please plan ahead for any large copy requests (20 or more). They must be copied through the on campus Kinko's Copy Center and require a 24-hour turn-around time; i.e. if you turn it in by 4:00pm today, it will not be ready until 4:00pm one day later. Your completed copy requests will be returned to your mailbox. (Off-campus photocopy services may be available by pre-arrangement with the SBE Receptionist at any Kinko's retail store.)
Copies being made for personal use cost .10/copy. Please make any payments to the SBE Receptionist.

IMPORTANT: You must verify that permission has been obtained to reproduce copyrighted materials. Click here for more information regarding the University's copyright policies.
