Orientation/Welcome Week 2008

Parent and Family Schedule

During the first two days of Orientation/Welcome Week, parents, guardians, and family members are encouraged to participate in an orientation of their own. Numerous events and workshops are offered just for you — activities that give a glimpse into academic and student life at Seattle Pacific.

When you and your student arrive on campus, be sure to check in:

  • For residence hall students, check-in is in the lobby of their residence hall.
  • For apartment residents, check-in is at Orientation Central is on the first floor of the Student Union Building.

Families should arrive on campus no later than 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 25. They should plan to leave either late Friday afternoon, September 26, or early Saturday morning, September 27.

Don’t forget! Register for Welcome Week no later than Friday, September 19.

Schedule of Events
When you arrive on campus, printed copies of the Orientation/Welcome Week program schedule will be available upon check-in at your designated location (see above).


Thursday, September 25
9 a.m.–4 p.m. New Student Check-in/Move-in
Residence Halls, Orientation Central, Campus Housing and Apartments (CHA)

Students and families check-in in the lobby of their assigned residence hall, or at Orientation Central (First Floor SUB) for those in campus housing and apartments.
10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Computer Network Hookup
Residence Halls and Student Union Building (SUB)

Computer and Information Systems (CIS) staff will be available in residence halls and in the Student Union Building to assist in the “Get Connected” program.

If you have any questions after these hours visit www.spu.edu/help, call CIS at 206-281-2982, or stop by the HelpDesk in Lower Marston Hall (M-F 7:30 a.m. –5 p.m.).

11 a.m.–12 p.m.

Special Presentation for Parents of Pre-Health Science Students
Demaray Hall 150

If you are a parent of a student interested in health sciences, you can do things to help him or her.

Come find out how to be supportive and what to expect as your student embarks on the health-sciences journey.

11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Campus Tours
Meet at Admissions Office (Demaray120)

One hour campus tours will be available for those arriving to campus for the first time.
1–2 p.m.

Legacy Reception: Alumni and Their New Students
Alumni Office, 3rd Ave and Nickerson

Alumni: You and your student are invited to the Alumni Center to connect with other SPU alumni and check out old pictures from Cascade yearbooks.

1–2:30 p.m. Student Counseling and Health Center Open House
Watson Hall

Take this opportunity to meet staff members from the Student Counseling Center and the Health Center. Ask any questions you might have about their services.
4–5 p.m. President's Opening Welcome
Royal Brougham Pavilion

Welcome to the SPU community! Join us for an official introduction and welcome from President Philip Eaton.
5–6:30 p.m. Dinner in the Loop
Tiffany Loop

Enjoy a variety of local flavors as you meet other students and families at this complimentary dinner.
6:30–7:30 p.m.

Residence Life Family Welcome
Ashton Hall Main Lounge, Emerson Hall Main Lounge, Hill and Moyer Halls together at Hill Hall Main Lounge, Commuter Student Parents in Collegium (SUB)

Residence life coordinators meet and greet resident students’ families, highlight the educational benefits of community living at SPU, and answer questions.

Parents and families of commuter students will hear from the Commuter Student Council about services available to support commuter students.

Parents and families are invited to join President and Mrs. Eaton and SPU officials for a special time of live music, dessert, and fellowship.

President Eaton will speak on the purpose and unique qualities of an SPU education followed by introductions of the vice presidents and other SPU leadership.

Parents join their students. Check the posted lists for classroom location.

What is University Seminar (USEM) anyway? Come meet your student’s USEM professor and their student academic mentor, and learn more about what academics will be like at SPU.
1:45–2:30 p.m. Leaving the Nest
First Free Methodist Church

Pastor Mark Abbott shares a heart-to-heart reflection on the transition that parents, families, and students face as the college years begin. An open time for discussion follows.
2:45 p.m. Reconnect With Your Student
Tiffany Loop

Meet up with your family in Tiffany Loop. Then head to Royal Brougham Pavilion for New Student Convocation.
3–4 p.m. New Student Convocation
Royal Brougham Pavilion

Join faculty, who will be robed in traditional academic regalia, for this formal ceremony of initiation and adoption into the SPU community.
4–4:45 p.m.

All good things must come to an end. As the Parent and Family portion of Orientation comes to a close, say goodbye to your student and make plans to come back in January for Family Weekend!
