Orientation/New Student Advising

For Post-Baccaulaureate Students

Congratulations on your admission to Seattle Pacific University!

Included here is information from the Undergraduate Catalog regarding the requirements for your post-baccalaureate degree.

Standards Governing Completion of a Second Bachelor’s Degree

A second bachelor’s degree may be earned upon completion of a minimum of 45 credits as a matriculated student at Seattle Pacific University subsequent to the granting of the first degree. The student must be accepted into a major; the date of acceptance determines the Undergraduate Catalog under which major requirements will be applied. A second degree is subject to the following conditions:

If the first degree was earned at SPU:

  1. At least 15 of the 45 credits for the second degree must be taken at SPU.
  2. At least 15 upper-division credits in the major must be earned at SPU.
  3. No more than 15 credits taken as a non-matriculated student may apply toward the additional bachelor's degree.
  4. Of the 45 credits required for the second degree, up to 15 credits may be earned prior to the granting of the first degree, provided the credits are in excess of the minimum (usually 180 credits) required for the first degree. In such a case, a student may be required to complete fewer than 45 credits for the second degree, but no fewer than 30 credits.
  5. All specified requirements for the second degree must be fulfilled, including all requirements in the major.

If the first degree was earned at another institution:

  1. A student who at some prior point matriculated at SPU must have at least 30 of the required 45 credits earned at SPU.
  2. No more than 15 credits taken as a non-matriculated student may apply toward the additional bachelor’s degree.
  3. A student who has not previously matriculated at SPU must earn at least 45 credits toward the second degree at SPU.
  4. At least 15 upper-division credits in the major must be earned at SPU.
  5. 5 credits in Christian Scriptures or Christian Theology must be completed at SPU.
  6. All specified requirements for the second degree must be fulfilled, including all requirements in the major.

Post-baccalaureate students work directly with a faculty advisor for advising and registration. The Office of Academic Affairs will assign an advisor to you. To find out which advisor you will be working with, or if you have any questions or concerns regarding your records, please contact an undergraduate academic counselor. Counselors work with students based on last name-assignments.

Please keep in mind that we do not transfer credits for post-baccalaureate students. If there are classes you need to take, for which you’ve fulfilled the prerequisite with previously completed coursework at an institution other than SPU, you will need to obtain registration permissions and/or overrides. Your instructor can provide those for you, and so can your academic counselor.

In addition, we’d like to provide you with some information regarding Seattle Pacific’s services for students. The following is a checklist of items you should complete during your first quarter at SPU:

 Learn about financial aid and student accounts here: www.spu.edu/depts/sfs. Student Financial Services will be able to assist you with questions regarding aid and tuition payments. Their office is in Demaray Hall, Room 10 (509 West Bertona) and their phone number is 206-281-2061.

 Visit the Office of University Services at 3220 Sixth Avenue West to get your Campus Card picture taken. Your SPU Student ID card will grant you access to many services at SPU including the Library and gym. You can also use your ID card to receive discounts for college students.

 Turn in health information at Health Services (Watson Hall, 353 West Bertona). Forms were included in your admission packet, and you should check with Health Services to be sure your immunizations are current.

 Campus Safety and Security is the place to learn more about parking, safety, and escort information. Visit their web site for more information. (You can apply for a parking permit when you’re logged in to the Banner Information System.)

Online Services for SPU Students are accessible from the home page (www.spu.edu). In the upper-right corner, by mousing over “Online Services,” those services available for you will pop up on the screen.

  • SPU’s online records database is the Banner Information System. By logging in to this system, you’ll be able to register for classes, review your SPU records, and more! For more information about logging in to your Banner account, visit the Computer and Information Systems website: www.spu.edu/cishelpdesk/accounts/info/.

  • We hope you’re already using the SPU email account you were assigned when you were admitted. All communications from university faculty and staff will be sent to your SPU email account. For more information on accessing your SPU e-mail account, visit the Computer and Information Systems website: www.spu.edu/cishelpdesk/email/access/.

  • SPU utilizes the online learning system Blackboard. Many courses have online components, and it will be necessary to log in to Blackboard to view your course information online. For more information about logging in to your Blackboard account, visit the Computer and Information Systems website: www.spu.edu/cishelpdesk/accounts/info/.

Again, congratulations on your admission! We look forward to serving you while you work toward your post-baccalaureate degree.
