University Ministries: Building Relationships

Cadres & Small Groups

Building relationships is one of our three big ideas in University Ministries.  You belong to this place.  You discover that when we worship together.  You also discover it as you meet with smaller groups of people.

In a Cadre, you get to get to know professors and staff outside of class.  You talk about how your major or another topic intersects with the faith.  Make connections, ask questions, belong.

In a small group, you connect to help each other grow spiritually.  Walk through a season of life together, encourage each other in faith and life decisions, have conversations that matter, have fun.  Most small groups are hosted by students for students.  Some are hosted by faculty and staff.

Current cadres are listed below.  Check back regularly to see if more have been created.  If you want to be in a small group with students, check out the SMC ministry or the Sharpen Ministry.  If you are interested in a small group with faculty or staff, contact um@spu.edu to see if any are open.

Be inspired, don’t be intimidated!  God is with you every step of the way!

Beyond Belief

Join us for a time of discussion about some of the foundational issues of our faith: Can we really know God? How is God like us? Why does God want us to pray? Was it necessary for Christ to die? When and why did God choose us? What is the Gospel message? Can people accept Jesus as Savior and not Lord? How do we grow to Christian maturity?  What makes a church more or less pleasing to God? Is Heaven a place? Who will be judged? Etc.  Bring your Bible and be prepared for lively discussion, singing and treats!

Please pick up your free copy of the text we will be using from Ashley Barrett in the Walls Advancement Center before our first meeting on Oct 18th.

Mu Kappa Mu Kappa supports missionary kids (MK’s), pastor’s kids, and trans-cultural kids, as they adjust to college, by providing an environment where they can build friendships and have a support group to aid them in their transition from one culture to another. We are a service-oriented club as well, focusing on SPRINT team support, international student outreach, mission and cultural awareness, and urban ministry in Seattle. Membership in Mu Kappa is open to any Seattle Pacific University student who is a missionary kid, multi-cultural kid, or any student interested in other cultures.

Luke 10:2 - A Call to Mission

For students who want to be an answer to the Lord’s prayer request in Luke 10:2. We talk about what needs to be in place in the life of a believer who hears Jesus’ call to mission. We also look at missionary bios, and both classic and current writing on missions. Finally, we’ll share stories of God’s working though us as we prayerfully put what we’ve learned into practice in Seattle and to the ends of the earth.

Memorable Writing Cadre

The Memorable Writing Cadre is a group of aspiring writers interested in exploring the art of narrative writing, including memoir, creative nonfiction and fiction. At each meeting, we discuss a particular narrative element, such as theme, setting, atmosphere, voice, form, scene, plot, characterization, literary devices, etc. and critique one another’s work in a supportive and constructive way. Our goal is to help each other muster discipline, engage in creative thinking and compose narratives that combine emotional honesty and artistry.  We strive to be a close community whose members comfortably share their understanding of life and faith through writing and discussion.

SPROUT - SPRINT Cadre

SPROUT is an outlet for students to engage in conversation about world missions, international perspectives, and our role in global affairs. It is a safe community in which students are not only challenged to learn from one another but become a more globally minded people. Although the cadre is an addition to SPRINT it is in no way limited to those involved in SPRINT nor does it exclude those who are. We welcome anyone who has a heart for missions or those who are passionate about what God is doing in the world.
