My 2 Cents’ Worth: Trust me, there’s a way

Lea en español

Ineliz SotoHigh school is free, and college is not. Are you feeling anxious about that? I know I was!

God placed the solution in my lap through an AmeriCorps presentation. My heart raced as I heard that I could serve under-represented youth as an AmeriCorps volunteer. That fall, I began my two-year journey in the inner city of Tacoma, Washington, helping students develop academically and spiritually.

One of the students I had mentored through the college application process recently told me that getting into college changed her life. She is the first in her family to attend college and one of the very few to do so in her community. Through AmeriCorps, I was able to tutor, mentor, and encourage students like her in a way that I never knew was possible. I was also learning skills that prepared me for my future career.

Did I mention I received nearly $10,000 in loan repayment?! Not only did I find a creative way to pay for loans, but God also directed me to my true calling. My advice: Never let the fear of college costs keep you away from your dreams. There is always a way to make it possible!

¡Dios le bendiga!
