My 2 Cents’ Worth: Do Your Research!
What sort of things stand out for you on a student’s application?
I want to see that the student knows who Seattle Pacific University is and what we are about. Admitting students who will thrive at SPU is important to us. It’s hard to tell if you’re that person if you don’t know about our mission to engage the culture and change the world.
Why are essays an important part of the application process?
Ultimately we need to see that each applicant can write a college-level essay and can succeed at Seattle Pacific.
How long have you been at SPU?
I’ve been on staff in the office of Undergraduate Admissions for 10 years! Including being a student, I’ve been at SPU since 1995. I had an incredible experience as
a student. So when I was offered the opportunity to work at SPU in Admissions, I didn’t have to think twice.
What’s something that students should know before they apply?
I know I already said this in a sense, but do your research. There is no sense in applying to a college that you wouldn’t seriously consider attending. Spend time searching a school’s website, ask other people about it, and visit.
What’s one of your favorite things about SPU?
I love that all of our varsity athletics are nCAA division II national contenders year in and year out. It makes it a lot of fun to cheer for them and go to the games!

Meet Ben Stuart, a junior theatre major earning a teaching certification at Seattle Pacific University. He’s a pretty typical guy: He lives in Emerson Hall, eats at Gwinn Commons, goes to class, works on campus, hangs out “on the floor,” eats “fourth-meals,” studies whenever, goes to bed later than he should, wakes up later than he should, and does it all over again the next day.
