Shalia Aina worships through hula. “It’s all about expressing yourself and doing it for God,” says the Maui native. At Seattle Pacific University, Shalia is a visual communications major who creates edgy designs in her art classes and recently pulled off an end of the year May Day event complete with Hawaiian music, dancing, and a Kahlua Pig. People are sometimes surprised to learn that she prefers Seattle — weather and all — to Maui. But if you ever doubt her roots, just watch her dance, says a longtime friend. “You can tell she’s Hawaiian. It just flows.”
