How Real Students Pay for College:
Joe Starmer

A name and a face to go with the numbers

Joe Starmer

Joe Starmer is a senior, visual communication major who volunteers with Young Life in Sammamish, Washington.

Recipient: Senior Joe Starmer, Visual Communication Major

Scholarships: Young Alumni Council Scholarship ($2,000 per year), Deans' Scholar Award ($9,000 per year), Ministry Service Award ($1,500 per year)

Who qualifies: The YAC scholarship goes to one senior a year who does volunteer work. For the dean's award, you need to do well academically in high school. And you have to have a parent who is employed full-time with a church or para-church organization for the ministry scholarship.

Main perk of the YAC scholarship, other than the funds: It's nice to be recognized for the volunteer work that I have done throughout my time at SPU, specifically with Young Life. This year, I was invited to a YAC event, where I was given a chance to explain what I do with Young Life and thank everyone for donating to the endowment.

What have you learned about SPU alumni through the scholarship: I've had the opportunity to meet young alums from SPU and see how they give back to, and still care for, the SPU community. This is displayed through the YAC Endowment that is made up entirely of alumni donations. It goes to show that once you're a Falcon, you're always a Falcon.
