etc's Third Annual Competition
Three years ago, we had an idea: Why not go on a hunt to find the most creative and livable residence hall rooms at Seattle Pacific University? We took dozens of student nominations and visited all of the rooms until we narrowed it down to three. The contest was so successful that we've done it ever since. But this year, something was different.
Instead of finding one print-worthy room for every five, we were wowed by most of the 24 rooms we saw. Not to say that our little contest has anything to do with it, but it's a hunch.
So now it’s time to reward the people that poured so much into
their rooms all year. Help us decide which of our finalists deserves
a $150 IKEA gift certificate.

Snazz Up Your Room the Right Way
Decorating tips from a student in the know
By Senior Lynn Russell
Some people associate the word “decorating” with dollar signs. Trust me, it does not have to be that way. It can be cheap, easy, and fun — a great way to express yourself!
Color: Adding colorful pillows to your bed, pinning sheets with fun designs to your ceiling, or hanging curtains on blank wall space are all great ways to add big splashes of color to your space.
Personalize: Print and put up pictures of your pets, friends, family, or favorite places. I suggest using sticky tack to make a border around your room, or using adhesive magnetic strips to put them on metal surfaces like a refrigerator or door frame.
Organize: 3M hooks are great for hanging twinkle lights around your ceiling, your keys by the door, or creating extra hanging storage for coats and the like. Plastic drawer sets are great too; they stack, allowing you more space to store your stuff.
Avoid: Don’t use duct tape to put posters on the wall. If you do, don’t be surprised when you rip half the paint off the wall a year later! Read directions carefully, and remember that your residence hall room will only be yours for a year.
Shop: You may have to go back a couple of times, but Value Village or Goodwill are great places to find cheap and unique treasures. You can also find some cheap and trendy lamps, side tables, rugs, and much more at IKEA, Ross, or Marshalls. Try garage sales too, and learn to bargain!
