Name and title?
Darrell Allen, assistant professor of history

Expertise?
East Asian history, with an emphasis on modern Japan

Hometown?
Denver, Colorado

Favorite anime Show to watch?
A) Bleach B) Full Metal Alchemist C) Gundam

Why?
First, it is an action/adventure series. Second, the interpersonal interaction of the main characters is so reflective of Japanese culture’s emphasis upon group dynamics. Third, I love how the main character’s personal development is just as important (if not more so) as developing his battle prowess.

How does Christianity look different in Japan than in the United States?
The most important difference rests in the fact that less than 1 percent of Japanese are Christian. Consequently, those who become Christians run the risk of becoming pariahs. Thus, while it is easy in this country to subscribe to a state of cultural Christianity, being identified as Christian in Japan immediately places one outside of the mainstream.

Book you think everyone should read?
I am a historian! There is no way I can pick just one! Allow me to recommend three: Taylor Branch’s powerful trilogy, "America in the King Years." The first volume is entitled "Parting the Waters," the second "Pillar of Fire," and the third "At Canaan's Edge." And since I have already exceeded the limit, allow me to add Sandy Tolan’s "The Lemon Tree."

What is a common misconception about history?
That history is simply the boring repetition of facts, dates, and information. Nothing could be further from the truth. The past represents an unparalleled teacher to those seeking guidance for the future.

What’s it like to have your very own samurai sword?
Fun! I have taken it to virtually all the classes I have taught at the University of Kansas and here at SPU. Other than for show and tell, however, I have not used it for anything — save for slicing into the back of my office chair while a teaching assistant at KU.
