Room With A View
Residence Hall: Emerson
Residents: Freshmen Freshman D.J. Dudley
Highlights: Wassily chair from the Bauhaus, huge windows, sheet of metal roofing with artwork and magnetic poetry
If Dwell Magazine had a dorm room edition, D.J. Dudley’s room would make the cut. His canvas was about the same as every other Emerson room: a grey, low-pile carpet, white walls, and pine-colored furniture. D.J. worked with those elements by adding additional neutral-colored basics.
But he didn’t let his room look like a tribute to wheat fields. He spiced up the neutral parts by adding harsh metal accents such as a steel bowl that holds Granny Smith apples. Then he splashed some color on the walls with modern paintings.
In the evenings, D.J. can often be found in his room — doing homework, listening to Dizzy Gillespie, and eating an apple. “It’s like an oasis for me,” D.J. says. “This is where I come back and decompress from the day.”
