The Highest Tide by Jim LynchSea creatures come to life in The Highest Tide
By Liz Gruchala-Gilbert, SPU Librarian
Miles O’Malley may be a fictional character from the depths of author Jim Lynch’s imagination, but the creatures he encounters are most definitely of this world. Tube worms, moon jellies, sea pens, piddocks, and a blue-gray sea star are just some of the sea life the reader comes across in The Highest Tide. This stunning portrayal of nature in the tides of Washington state’s Puget Sound is not merely material for a setting, but an integral part of this coming-of-age novel. The reader may feel the ebb and flow as teenage Miles struggles with love, lust, responsibility, divorce, fame, religion, and even an earthquake.

This beautifully written, yet accessible and informative novel is part of the Seattle Pacific University Library’s Popular Fiction Collection — a small group of recent best-sellers, available for leisure reading. This particular book was from my own personal library. I wanted to share it, so I donated it to the Popular Fiction Collection.

Why? Well, one of my favorite things about living in this area is Puget Sound and the low-tide walks you can experience. This book gives anyone the opportunity to experience the maritime environment of the Pacific Northwest while enjoying a sincere story.

What do you do as a librarian? I provide different kinds of services, from assisting faculty with their research to helping students get connected with the specific books and articles they need for a paper. I meet individually with students to teach search strategies, and I answer random questions at the reference desk — such as “How many roses do we import each year from Ecuador?”

Favorite book: The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman

Best part about working at Seattle Pacific: The people. Everyone who works at SPU seems completely dedicated to providing the best service possible. Plus the students are enthusiastic, creative, and motivated. It’s an excellent atmosphere.

Favorite part of the Library: The Reference Desk. I never know what someone will ask!

Hobbies: Music, building with Habitat for Humanity, vegan cooking.

Family: one husband, two daughters, three cats.
