Runner Up
The Ashton Environment

Residence Hall: Ashton
Residents: Heather Olson (junior) and Lynn Jansen (junior) (sophomore)
Highlights: Bird mobile, city rug, sewing table

Walk through the doors of Heather Olson’s and Lynn Jansen’s room, and you slip into another world. Birds circle above city streets, grassy curtains rustle in the breeze, and hundreds of two-dimensional magazine people wander all over the walls. “Someone at the beginning of the year told us, ‘This is such a cool environment,’” says Olson. “We call it our ‘environment’ now. It’s our little haven of the things we love.”

Those things include patterned fabrics, a record player, and several maps. Jansen creates and mends at her sewing station, while Olson writes poetry and stories for SPU’s Falcon newspaper. Outside of their room, the pair often explores Seattle on foot. “We like to walk to Ballard, Fremont, and Capitol Hill [all Seattle neighborhoods],” says Olson. The trips often result in more photos for decor.
