The Marvel Is in the Details
- 1,556 truckloads of earth (14,000 cubic yards)
were removed during excavation for the building.
- Construction required more than 426 tons of steel, 556 truckloads
of concrete (5,000+ cubic yards) and 140,000 worker hours.
- Measuring 63,237 square feet, the facility is spread over four
floors and cost $416 per square foot, or a total cost of $26.3
million.
- The building is one of the finest in Seattle certified by
the U.S. Green Building Council to achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (L.E.E.D.) Silver Status because of its sustainable design and construction
practices.
- Ninety three percent of the construction waste was recycled,
including materials from the demolition of Tiffany and Green Halls.
More than 50 percent of the Tiffany Hall exterior bricks are being
used as pavers outside the south entrance and in Tiffany Loop.
- More than 45 miles of telecommunications cabling to connect 956 data jacks inside the building.
- The facility includes nearly 300 individual student lab lockers,
24 laptop computers and 120 new individual microscopes (enough
for every student in class at any given time).
- Friendly to persons with disabilities, the building has Braille
signage; fume hoods with paddle controls; lower counters for students
in wheelchairs; and full elevator access.
- A water filtration system on site supplies distilled water for
uncontaminated experimentation.
- Safety is paramount in the building. Emergency showers in all
labs protect students and faculty in the event of chemical accidents.
A secure freight elevator transports chemicals between floors.
Quiet, remote-controlled fume hoods remove noxious fumes quickly
and efficiently. Security cameras monitor all areas of the building
from halls to labs to classrooms.
