Communications Specialist Clint Kelly published an op-ed piece about Helen Keller in the October 19 issue of the Mobile Press-Register. In a special to the oldest newspaper in Alabama (established 1813), Clint commended the state for recently installing a statue of Keller in the National Capitol. Jenifer Phelan, education liaison/remote services librarian, was interviewed for an article in the Online Computer Library Center's magazine WesternTrek. (Fall 2007). Phelan talks about SPU Library's “Student Response System." The system includes two kits of 25 handheld clickers and a portable receiver that can be used for library instruction, or can be checked out from the library by faculty to use in class. The kits can be used independently, or together for groups of up to 50 students. Gilnett on KCIS (2/5/2007)
Fine Arts Marketing Associate Kim Gilnett was a guest on KCIS's (630 AM) radio show “Living Christian" hosted by Michelle Mendoza on February 5. He talked about C.S. Lewis and the Lewis lecture at SPU on February 5. Gilnett was an early staff member for the SPU C.S. Lewis Institute, and helped lead several SPU C.S. Lewis study tours to Oxford. He is a member of the C.S. Lewis Foundation Board of Trustees, and from 1993 to 2000 provided leadership for the Foundation's restoration of The Kilns. Since 2000, Gilnett has helped to host the Foundation's Summer Seminars at The Kilns.

Dick Staub, adjunct faculty member in the School of Theology, was part of a panel on "Speaking of Faith," public radio's weekly conversation about religion. The show is produced by American Public Media and broadcast on more than 165 public radio stations. Edwards Interviewed on KOMO-AM Radio (5/15/2006)
KOMO-AM 1000 radio invited Assistant Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy Scott Edwards to participate in a live interview on April 24 in response to a recent Seattle Times article regarding registered counselors. Edwards is president of the Washington Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Scott spoke about the minimal requirements needed to receive registration as a counselor in Washington state ($40 and a four-hour HIV/AIDS course). Furthermore, he emphasized how people easily mistake the registration as a credential. He recommended anyone seeking mental health services review the therapists/counselors disclosure form to ensure at least a master's degree and supervised clinical experience.

Winifred Weter, 1909-2006 (1/17/2006)
Winifred Weter, professor emerita of classical languages and physical education, passed away January 3. She was 96 years old. During her 40 years at SPU, she taught Greek, Latin, classical literature, and coached intramural athletics. A tribute during her retirement in 1975 stated, “Her love and enthusiasm for the study of classical languages and literature have inspired a similar love and enthusiasm in thousands of students, and her Christian demeanor and integrity have earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues." SPU Student Leads the Campaign for “National Wear Red Day" (2/7/2005)
SPU student Melinda Classen appeared on various local media to tell her story for the second annual “National Wear Red Day" on February 4. The day is sponsored by the American Heart Association (AHA) and seeks to draw attention to heart disease as the No. 1 killer of women. Melinda suffered a sudden cardiac arrest on campus several years ago, and was resuscitated by an automatic external defibrillator used by a Safety and Security officer. On February 4, Melinda appeared on “Seattle Live" on KONG-TV (Channel 16), KOMO-TV News at 11 a.m. and at an AHA breakfast at Bon-Macy's. The three daughters of Mitch and Linda Richards served as models for this year's Coupeville Arts Festival poster. Mitch is the guest group program coordinator at Camp Casey. Daughters Reed (2 years old), Reilly Joy (7), Renne (5) and their friend Sebastian (7), are featured on the official poster for the festival, which appeared throughout Whidbey Island and the Puget Sound this summer. Enying Zhou '43, known as Lora Jones while attending SPU, was featured in the Seattle P-I on June 14. Enying was a Chinese orphan adopted by a Free Methodist missionary. She was educated in the United States but returned to China as a missionary. She was then imprisoned by the Chinese government for 20 years. After her release from prison, she continued to teach in China. Enying received an honorary doctorate during SPU's Commencement exercises on June 12. In awarding her the degree, SPU President Philip Eaton said, “God bless you, Lora, for your steadfastness in the face of adversity. Reed Davis, associate professor of political science and a candidate for U.S. Senate, was featured in The Seattle Times on May 18 and on Fox News on May 24. Both stories dealt with the Washington State Republican Party barring Reed from speaking at the upcoming state convention for failing to sign a pledge not to “speak ill" of fellow Republicans. Jeffrey Overstreet, university communications specialist and a critic and columnist for ChristianityToday.com, was recently quoted in a syndicated story by Gannett News Services on violence in movies. The story appeared in newspapers throughout the country, including Florida Today. Jeff reports he was misquoted in the story, and his actual quote was "I'm trying to point them back toward looking at art holistically, not judging something by particular elements right off hand, but looking at how those elements are used in the whole piece and seeing how they can be interpreted in context and whether they're gratuitous or not." The SPU campus and the upcoming SPU Queen Anne and Magnolia Garden Tour will be featured on “Gardening With Ciscoe" on KING-TV, channel 5, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 22. SPU ranked #2 in the higher education category of “Best Christian Places to Work" by the Best Christian Workplaces Institute (BCWI). The survey polled more than 10,000 employees from 107 organizations in a variety of Christian industries. In a story on the rankings in Christianity Today magazine, Associate Director of BCWI Helen Lee said, “The workplaces that stood out were the ones that extended the boundaries of loving one's neighbor to include office colleagues. Woodward Quoted in Baseball Story in Orlando Sentinel (10/27/2003)
Bill Woodward, professor of history, was quoted in a story on baseball in the October 14 edition of the Orlando Sentinel. The article was titled “Major League's Legendary Losers Renew Fan Frenzy: The Cubs and Red Sox Ignited a Baseball Fever Not Seen in Year." In an interesting side note, the Sentinel reporter found Bill by doing a Google search with the words “history, baseball, professor." Bill asks, “Might this be the pinnacle of such academic achievement as I could hope to attain?"

Gordy Presnell, women's basketball coach, was highlighted in the summer edition of The Messenger, the alumni magazine of Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho. Gordy is a 1983 graduate of NNU.

Hartje's Article on Universal Design Published in the Journal of Business (9/29/2003)
An article written by Associate Professor of Interior Design Sandra Hartje on universal design appeared in the September 4 edition Spokane's Journal of Business.The goal of universal design is to build spaces that meet the needs of as many users as possible, from children to the elderly to people who have temporary or permanent disease or disability.
