Increased Competition for Admission at SPU
Record Number of Applications Means Higher Selectivity

Seattle, WA - It’s becoming more difficult to get into one of Seattle’s major universities. A record number of applications and a capacity enrollment at Seattle Pacific University mean increased competition for admission.

“Very well-qualified students applied to SPU in record numbers this year, giving us greater opportunity to select the strongest applicants and those students who will benefit most from a Seattle Pacific education,” says Marjorie Johnson, vice president for administration and university relations. “In a nutshell, great students in large numbers are choosing SPU.”

The number of freshman applicants to Seattle Pacific increased by 100 this year to 1,918. The University’s admit rate, an important measure of student demand and institutional success, improved by seven percentage points to 86 percent. The academic credentials of incoming students also improved, with the average GPA of incoming freshmen at 3.65, up from 3.59 last year, and the average SAT score of incoming freshmen at 1,160, up from 1,141 last year.

Even while it has dramatically increased selectivity, SPU will experience overall enrollment growth this fall. “We admitted the number of students who, based on previous years’ experience, would yield our target enrollment goal,” explains Director of Undergraduate Admissions Jennifer Kenney. “What was different this year is that a greater percentage of those students chose to enroll.”

The result is that Seattle Pacific will welcome the largest-ever new student class at SPU. “We’re thrilled with the energy surrounding this class as well as its academic credentials,” says Kenney.

The large entering class will contribute to a record-setting enrollment of 3,900 students when classes begin on Monday, September 26. Total enrollment for 2005-06 is projected at 3,100 undergraduate and 800 graduate students.

Later this fall, SPU will unveil 2014: Blueprint for Excellence, a 10-year plan to expand the University’s influence and impact nationally. “We believe that a university can change the world for good and that’s what we intend to do,” says Johnson, adding that the strength of the application pool and increased selectivity demonstrate that SPU is laying the groundwork for its long-term goals. “We are recruiting and attracting students best qualified to fulfill our vision, then building a campus and community life that equips these students to engage the culture and change the world,” she says.

Seattle Pacific University is a fully-accredited Christian university offering a comprehensive undergraduate and graduate academic program to 3,900 students. Founded in 1891, the University is located on the north slope of Queen Anne Hill in Seattle, Washington.
