INTERNSHIPS & SUPERVISORS:

BECOMING A SUPERVISOR

The site supervisor provides an integral part of the intern's training, guiding the intern's clinical activities. The supervisor evaluates the intern's clinical performance over current clinical cases. In addition, the supervisor monitors, evaluates and provides appropriate feedback toward the interns' professional growth as a therapist. The site supervisor and SPU practicum supervisor form a supervision team in which they communicate as needed and during evaluation periods during the intern's clinical development.

Effective supervision entails mentoring someone who is newer in the field than the supervisor. It is expected that supervisors will allow and encourage an intern's exploration of appropriate theoretical and clinical models of marriage and family therapy, even if the orientation differs from that of the supervisor.

The internship site will offer the intern high quality supervision with regard to the intern's delivery of clinical services. The site supervisor and SPU practicum supervisor are expected to communicate as they form a supervision team. In order to be approved to supervise, the supervisor must be either:

  1. an AAMFT Approved Supervisor,
  2. an AAMFT Supervisor Candidate, or
  3. meet equivalency criteria detailed below.
    Evidence of Education and Licensure by:
         1) graduate degree in marriage and family therapy, or a related
         mental health discipline;
         2) state licensure (LMFT, LCSW, LMHC, or Licensed Psychologist);
         3) didactic/experiential training in the supervision of marriage and family therapy (at least 15 hours); and
  4. training and education in marriage and family therapy. Evidence of Clinical and Supervision
    Experience by:
         1) at least three (3) years, post-graduate, clinical practice of marital and
         family therapy; and
         2) at least one (1) year supervising marital and family therapy in a clinical
         setting.
