Journeys of Discovery seek to provide dynamic "expansive learning" experiences in units of forty-five 'travelogue lessons' that follow a specific and historic geographical itinerary. These readings are derived from primary source accounts to foster high academic achievement proficiencies and appreciation for these moral dramas. These timeless moral themes are implicit and consistent in journey accounts of notable individuals ranging from those of Abraham and Herodotus to Eleanor of Aquitaine and Lewis & Clark. The extensive written accounts of these persons and others featured in the Journeys curriculum provide a prodigious and significant resource base for studying other cultural traditions and times and all disciplines within the content areas--history, literature, drama, geography, life and physical science, and mathematics. May be repeated for credit 1 time.

Of the three branches of our federal government, the executive is unique in that it provides one individual with specific powers and responsibilities. The class will trace the history of the presidency from the founding fathers at the Constitutional Convention who created an office unlike anything known at the time to the administration of George W. Bush. The class will strike a balance between knowing the presidents at a person/biographical level and understanding the issues which defined their administrations. Their relations with the Congress and to a lesser degree the judiciary will also be examined as will the concept of presidential greatness.

This course is based principally on the British documentary, The First World War. This series provides a unique perspective on one of the bloodiest conflicts the world has ever known. Much of the material is presented in the words of the participants who range from presidents and prime ministers to privates and proletarians. It incorporates an astonishing collection of still photographs, motion pictures, and art. In addition, a number of prominent historians are featured with their commentaries and insights. Such an approach permits us, as students of history, to see and hear history as it actually happened, but also to gain greater understanding and insight. I'm sure you will find these words and images moving and instructive.
