EDCN 5541 Effective Strategies for Working With Children (2-3 credits)

Provides an in-depth immersion in the critical elements for working successfully with emotionally/behaviorally disabled students. Provides participants with experiences with the strategies at the same time they learn how to implement them in their own settings. Designed to provide front line service providers with the skills and knowledge necessary to implement effective interventions with emotionally/behaviorally disabled children and youth. Includes: components of a structured and effective environment; designing effective instruction; effective behavior management; working with groups effectively; understanding the conflict cycle; and creating positive behavior support plans for students and their families. Equivalents: CEU 2695 and EDSP 5941.

EDSE 5160 Advanced Classroom Management: Children as Change Agents (3 credits)

Prerequisite: EDSE 5022. Please see computer prerequisite B in the registration information for minimum computer requirements. Introduces the social-cognitive approach to behavior management in the school as well as motivation and self-management. Covers cognitive-behavior modification (CBM) and cognitive restructuring, a CBM strategy used to help students challenge their own irrational thinking that contributes to their behavior problems. Also examines the CBM strategies of self-instructional training, verbal mediation, and problem solving. Discusses teaching students how to manage stress (in the form of anxiety, depression, anger) that also contributes to their behavior problems. Also covers the diagnosis of behavior problems using a social-cognitive approach, facilitating student use of self-management and CBM strategies, and measuring student progress.

Uses a non-traditional approach to examine how to work with children, ages 3-21, with autism, blindness/visual impairments, deafness/hearing impairments, general early childhood issues, and significant disabilities. Emphasizes self-directed learning, a process through which participants define their own learning needs and objectives related to individual students and unique situations. EDSE 5194 Powerful Academic and Teaching Strategies for All Students in Inclusive Classrooms (5 credits)

Teaches what all educators need to understand about the learning challenges of students with mild to moderate disabilities (e.g., ADHD, LD). Includes struggles that are common in reading, written language, math, organization, time-management and study skills. Also addresses the 'how-to's' of reaching and teaching these students in the general education classroom. Provides powerful and practical instructional and academic strategies to boost achievement in those areas, and the various interventions and accommodations that may be needed to enable all diverse learners to achieve success.

EDSE 5204 Dyslexia: Diagnosis and Instructional Strategies (5 credits)

Explains that the fundamental problem in dyslexia is a linguistic one, a phonological processing deficit, a sensitivity to the sounds of language and to the segmental nature of language. Teaches participants to recognize diagnostic criteria broadening the previous discrepancy between IQ and reading achievement. Shows participants the pattern to look for in test results and possible testing modifications to uncover subtle skills. Gives systematic and direct instructional strategies necessary to remediate phonemic awareness and phonics; fluency training; and enriched language experiences.

EDSE 5205 Educating Children Prenatally Affected by Drugs and Alcohol (5 credits)

Covers the physical, intellectual, and behavioral characteristics of prenatally drug/alcohol effected youngsters, whose deficits range from mild learning disabilities to severe mental retardation. Describes basic cognitive processes of learning, which point to the practical instructional strategies: structure, repetition, and consistency; methods that help youngsters with these or similar disabilities to learn and to manage their personal conduct. Focuses primarily on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).

EDSE 5218 Audit and Safety Net Compliant IEPs (1 credit)

Utilizes the Washington Administrative Code (WACs) and monitors results from the state of Washington's Consolidated Program Review (CPR) as a guide for developing an IEP that is compliant with state and federal guidelines and requirements and sufficiently comprehensive to address the individualized program needs of the student. Also addresses the importance of continuity between the Summary Evaluation, IEP and delivery of services.

EDSE 5225 Creating Writers: Writing Instruction for Students with IEPs (3 credits)

This course addresses methods for assessing and teaching written composition to children and youth with disabilities. As a result of participating in the course, its discussions and activities, students will (a) develop a deeper understanding of their own skills and processes as a writer, (b) understand what students are to know and be able to do in writing based on WA EALRs and GLEs, write sample IEP goals and objectives aligned with EALRs and GLEs, describe instructional strategies and learning activities for supporting student goal achievement, and identify student products used to assess demonstrations of learning, (c) understand and practice strategies for teaching and assessing writing, and (d) identify core elements of a writing program for students with mild to moderate disabilities receiving writing instruction in general education and special education settings.

EDSE 5653 Teaching Reading to Exceptional Students (3 credits)

Explore the learner characteristics associated with reading difficulties and how to remediate them at both the elementary and secondary levels. Learn to create a balanced reading program for students with disabilities that includes phonemic, word recognition, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency skills. Students will learn how to assess, teach and monitor reading skills. Students will create their own materials for reading instruction and learn how to evaluate commercially-available reading programs for appropriateness for students with disabilities. EDSE 5924 The Joys and Challenges of Working with Twice-Exceptional Children (1 credit)

Introduces students to the paradox of the twice exceptional child. These students, being both intellectually gifted and disabled at the same time, present a number of unique issues for educators, administrators, and parents as they try to educate the twice exceptional students within the boundaries that are present in the public school system. Helps educators identify twice exceptional students. In addition, the course explores strategies regarding extending educational services for the twice exceptional child beyond the classroom.

Covers the physical, intellectual and behavioral characteristics of a variety of disabilities commonly found in the classroom including motor activity disorders, language, auditory, visual and perceptual disorders, in addition to neurological deficits that affect academic performance.
