| Explores musical concepts through creative expressions in eurhythmics. Examines current related research, especially how musical contexts clarify and deepen meaning and interpretation. Investigates the basic elements of music, utilizing them creatively to express higher-order thinking, interpretation and emotions. Familiarizes participants with diverse music from around the world and how it expresses deep culture. | Acquaints students with music from a variety of world cultures. It is constructed as a music appreciation course, but deals with music of specific cultures from every geographic area of the world. The instructor's background in multicultural education and ethnomusicology serves as a foundation for study of music as it exists in any particular setting on earth. Students will not only listen to recordings and view videotapes representing diverse non-Western musics, but will be encouraged to supply materials and participate in novel musical experiences. Music reading skills are a plus, but not expected or required. Students will be prepared to take this multicultural perspective on music and apply it to their own classroom settings. Equivalent: CEU 3139. Class not open to: Undergraduate level. |

| Gives singers with a solid vocal training the specialized skills associated with the musical and stage performance of baroque opera. This includes musical performance practice (interpretation, ornamentation) and vocal production as well as movement (deportment, gesture, baroque dance) and acting. For instrumentalists the course contains a workshop on the understanding and performance of continuo notation as well as the practical work in preparation for the final performance. Instrumentalists also attend the vocal master classes and movement classes. |
