Explores the concepts of music and movement as powerful teaching tools to enhance learning in every educational setting. Emphasizes connections between math, science, reading, language arts, social studies and visual art. Draws from the current brain research and models an inclusive, conceptual teaching approach. EDCN 5485 Integrating Music and Learning: A Full-Cycle Approach (3 credits)

Explores musical concepts through creative expressions in eurhythmics. Examines current related research, especially how musical contexts clarify and deepen meaning and interpretation. Investigates the basic elements of music, utilizing them creatively to express higher-order thinking, interpretation and emotions. Familiarizes participants with diverse music from around the world and how it expresses deep culture. Prepares teachers to articulate the meaningful integration of music in interdisciplinary curriculum. Equivalent: CEU 2703.

EDMU 5022 Worlds of Music (1-3 credits)

Acquaints students with music from a variety of world cultures. It is constructed as a music appreciation course, but deals with music of specific cultures from every geographic area of the world. The instructor's background in multicultural education and ethnomusicology serves as a foundation for study of music as it exists in any particular setting on earth. Students will not only listen to recordings and view videotapes representing diverse non-Western musics, but will be encouraged to supply materials and participate in novel musical experiences. Music reading skills are a plus, but not expected or required. Students will be prepared to take this multicultural perspective on music and apply it to their own classroom settings. Equivalent: CEU 3139. Class not open to: Undergraduate level.

EDTE 5679 Digital Audio Recording, Editing and CD Burning (2 credits)

Focuses on both hardware and software recorders, microphones, patterns and placements, and some basics on the physics of sound. Uses Pro Tools LE 7.0/MBOX software for recording and editing. Also addresses Midi recording, editing, importing and conversion to audio.

MUS 5055 Using Technology to Complete the CBPA's (Music) (1-2 credits)

Washington state music teachers are required by law to implement Classroom Based Performance Assessments to all 5th, 8th and 10th grade students beginning in 2008. This course focuses on learning various ways of using music technology to assist the teacher in achieving this assessment. Course will consist of: understanding the law as it currently exists, examination of the rubrics and EALR's, discussion of creative ways of implementation using music technology, and examination of model pilot programs that are working. Equivalent: CEU 3127.

MUS 5056 Music Therapy Theories and Techniques (3 credits)

Provides an introduction to the uses of music in various health care, educational and therapeutic applications. Offers an overview of music therapy theory and methods through an integrated approach using lectures, class discussions, readings, audio visual presentations, journaling, and experiential opportunities. No prior musical experience is necessary.

MUS 5057 Baroque Opera Performance (2 credits)

Gives singers with a solid vocal training the specialized skills associated with the musical and stage performance of baroque opera. This includes musical performance practice (interpretation, ornamentation) and vocal production as well as movement (deportment, gesture, baroque dance) and acting. For instrumentalists the course contains a workshop on the understanding and performance of continuo notation as well as the practical work in preparation for the final performance. Instrumentalists also attend the vocal master classes and movement classes.
