EDCA 5443 Integrating Children's Literature Into Science and Social Studies (5 credits)

Explores strategies that effectively incorporate children's literature into science and social studies lessons and units. Studies the rationale for using literature in subject areas and suggests appropriate books, both fiction and nonfiction, based on curriculum criteria. Demonstrate knowledge of an integrated approach to teaching the designated subject areas and read a variety of children's books, creating a resource bibliography. Designed primarily for teachers in elementary and middle school. Class not open to: Undergraduate level.

Covers alphabetizing, spelling, synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, word usage, contractions, abbreviations, capitalization, punctuation and proofreading. Presents a variety of game formats easily adapted for multi-level skill areas in language arts. Presents skill areas selected from multi-school objectives for grades 3-6. Provides elementary teachers practical ideas for integrating spelling into their language programs. Uses relevant research to provide information regarding how children learn to spell and how to use this information to assess students' needs. Incorporates two texts: Assessing and Teaching Beginning Readers, and Assessing and Teaching Beginning Writers to create a comprehensive and focused course on the teaching of reading and writing. Focuses on the intentional and appropriate planning of literacy instruction. The authors have created The Early Literacy Continuum for early childhood teachers to use in order to plan instruction. EDCN 5920 Book Study: The Multiple Intelligences of Reading and Writing (3 credits)

Shows how all of the intelligences, including linguistic, logical-mathematical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and naturalistic will help students acquire reading and writing skills. This approach helps students who are not strong in linguistic intelligences, which encompasses reading and writing. This course is meant for special education teachers and regular pre-kindergarten through grade 12 teachers. It uses Howard Garner's multiple intelligences theory and recent brain research on reading and writing with historical, anthropoligical, biographical, and psychological perspectives on literacy. Strategies, tips, and resources for teaching grammar, spelling, decoding and reading comprehension are provided.

EDRD 5460 Developmental Reading Methods and Activities (5 credits)

Provides 50 highly effective and motivational activities that address the problem of connecting phonetic instruction and motor, visual, auditory and inference skills to "real reading," achieved by linking these concepts to children's choices in literature. Activities include a blackline master, follow a game format, and are designed for the whole class before being used in small groups or on a one-to-one basis. Provides a practical way to study words with students, based on the research on invented and developmental spelling. Uses the framework of the five stages of spelling or orthographic development. Discusses the various types of research and the constraint levels in educational research. Covers the internal and external validity of educational research. As part of these two key areas of reading instruction, the five elements of effective reading instruction will be highlighted, including definitions, implications for instruction and future directions. These five elements include instruction in: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and text comprehension. Also provides information on important assessment terms and definitions and will explore how reading assessment fits within the Reading First Program. This is the third course in a three-course series. It is recommended but not required that these courses be taken in order. If course 3 is taken prior to course 1 some additional research may be required.

Explores some of the different awards given to both children's literature and their authors. Looks at children's book awards such as: The Jane Addams Book award, given to books that foster a better understanding of the world; The Dolly Gray Award, given for books, which recognize high quality children's books that portray individuals with developmental disabilities; and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, given to a children's writer or illustrator whose books have made a lasting contribution to literature for children. Also includes information on current blogs, websites and publications that profile excellence in children's literature.

EDRD 5750 Book Study: Reading Instruction for Students who are At-Risk or Have Disabilities (5 credits)

Presents strategies for teaching children who are at-risk, including children with learning and behavioral disabilities, children of poverty, and children who speak English as a second language. Integrates scientifically-validated practices into a systematic teaching process that uses data from students in authentic classrooms to guide practice. Presents five components validated by the National Reading Panel including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Curriculum-based assessment measures, including DIBELS, are presented to identify children at risk for reading failure and to monitor student progress. Using DIBELS assessments to pinpoint student skill development as students acquire alphabetic principle is also covered. Lastly differentiated instruction and specific strategies to maximize learning for all students are provided.

EDWR 5185 Developing Writing Assignments for the Real World (5 credits)

Examines how giving to others gives people something to write about. Also reviews examples of others who are making a difference in their communities by studying stories in the text, Stone Soup for the World. Educators will complete a variety of writing exercises including poetry and narrative essay and examine how to use these ideas in the classroom. Participants will use the writing process to compose a letter, speech, or expository essay written for a real-world audience. The course is taught with the "teacher-as-writer", however, all writing exercises and assignments can be adapted for the classroom. The course is geared toward educators in grades 4-10.
