Introduces participants to ways to integrate traditional tests with portfolios, performance-based evaluations and other authentic assessments. EDCN 5696 Educational Assessment: Assessing Student Learning in the Classroom (3 credits)

Computer prerequisites: Macintosh Operating Systems: Mac OS 9.x or OS 10.x, 256MB of RAM and 5MB of free hard disc space, 15" or larger color monitor with a minimum resolution of 800x600, CD driver 4x minimum speed and a printer connected to your computer. Windows Operating Systems: Windows Operating Systems: Windows 2000, XP Home, Professional or newer, 256MB of RAM and 5MB of free hard disc space; 15" or larger color monitor with a minimum resolution of 800x600, CD driver 4x minimum speed and a printer connected to your computer. Further develops the conceptual and technical skills required by teachers to help them identify their educational goals, and implement meaningful instructional strategies for effective learning by students with special needs. Focuses on assessment for instructional programming. Outlines procedures for designing or selecting, administering and interpreting a variety of informal assessment measures typically used in schools. Emphasizes the use of a range of informal assessment measures in the academic and social skills areas. Also addresses the presentation of assessment information in an acceptable format to parents and teachers.

EDCN 5828 Classroom Based Assessment: Practical Strategies for Powerful Learning (5 credits)

Computer Prerequisite: Participants must have a personal computer with internet access. Focuses on helping today's K-12 teachers understand, appreciate, and reclaim the power of everyday assessment for the benefit of student learning in their own classrooms. Enables participants to expand their understanding of the role of assessment and instruction, and learn a wide range of practical, user-friendly strategies designed to support learning, not just measure it. With the strength of research supporting each newly acquired skill, teachers will build their expertise in identifying key learning targets, understanding the distinguishing attributes of a wide range of assessment strategies, appropriately matching assessments to learning targets, adjusting instruction based on assessment information, providing effective feedback, using assessment data to determine grades that accurately reflect student achievement, and helping students develop confidence as learners.

EDCN 5911 Book Study: Classroom Assessment and Grading that Work (3 credits)

Provides an in-depth exploration of effective standards-based formative assessment to enhance student achievement from kindergarten through twelfth grade. Identifies the characteristics of effective assessment, uses national and state standards to create topic-based assessment, and teaches what types of assessment items and tasks best measure student progress. Lastly, this course discusses types of scoring and grading systems to accurately portray student progress along a continuum of learning.

EDCN 5912 Book Study: Assessing and Improving School Discipline Programs (3 credits)

Provides a framework for preventing and effectively dealing with school discipline problems. Discusses four principal components: positive relationship with students; clearly defined parameters for student behavior; effective monitoring of students; and appropriate consequences for misbehavior. Also discusses a framework for devising and implementing appropriate interventions, in addition to guidelines for talking to parents.
