GUATEMALA

This partnership started officially in 2003 with Seattle Pacific University and America Latina Schools and Clinics in Guatemala City, Guatemala. (Unofficially I have worked with them since 1995, bringing teams to serve through local churches and K-12 Christian Schools).

This partnership has many facets. Several faculty from the School of Education including Dr. Frank Kline, Dr. Debby Lierman, Dr. Bill Nagy, and Dr. Henry Algera, have presented over the past three years on topics related to education including special education, classroom management, reading, development of a university and teaching English as a second language.

In addition to faculty, the School of Education has joined with SPRINT to send education students down to Guatemala for the summer to work in the schools. Since 2003 we have had over 25 students live and work in Guatemala City, serving in the classrooms as student teachers and living with local families. The impact has been felt on our SPU campus as these students move through the education program with a more global view of education and compassion for those without resources. Finally, we are working toward bringing faculty from America Latina to SPU to work on our campus and meet our students. Bea Zapata (Superintendent of America Latina) has been on campus and in classes two years and is planning on bringing a group in this fall.

America Latina is an inner-city Christian school with 6 campuses and over 3500 students in grades K-12. More than half their population is on scholarship through Partners International and other organizations that help third-world students attend schools of quality. There are also six medical clinic attached to the school and our students have had the opportunity to travel and work with medical teams.

This is a strong partnership with much room for growth.
