Greetings from Dr. Rowley
Dean, School of Education

Welcome to the beginning of a new academic year! Whether you are a returning graduate student or joining us for the first time, we are delighted you will be a member of our learning community. Students, faculty, and staff are all teachers and learners. Regardless of the roles we play, we learn from each other due to the unique histories and experiences we each bring to the School of Education! I am grateful for the amazing learning environment we create at Seattle Pacific University.

As we begin this year, I want to make you aware of several new programs and administrative changes:

New Programs
  • A new M.Ed. Degree in Literacy will be implemented this autumn. This program takes the place of the previous Reading and Language Arts specialization in the Curriculum & Instruction Program. Scott Beers will serve as Chair of the program.

  • We will begin a new Program Administrator Certification Program. This program will prepare individuals whose goal is to serve in administrative positions in school districts but do not seek certification as a school principal.

  • Our application to implement a new Principal Professional Certification program for principals in the field has been approved. Professional Certification is the state's second-level certification that follows Residency Certification.

Staff Changes
  • After a year of reflection regarding our office needs, we determined that the Graduate Program Manager position needs to be increased to a full-time position in order to better serve our graduate programs. We regret it is necessary to announce that Al Blomquist has decided to resign his position. Because of family commitments in providing care for his grandsons, and other interests, he is unable to expand his work to full time. We are in the process of filling the position as quickly as possible.

  • We are pleased to announce that Greg Gelderman has accepted our offer to fill the position of Endorsement Associate in the School of Education. Among his responsibilities, Greg will stay abreast of technical knowledge related to state teacher certification endorsement requirements, help develop policy and answers policy questions related to certification, and collaborate with faculty to align endorsement competencies with courses.
Administrative Changes
  • After five years of outstanding service, Chris Sink is stepping down as chair of the School Counseling Program. We are pleased to announce that Cher Edwards has been assigned the new Chair of the School Counseling Program.

  • Greg Fritzberg has given several years of outstanding service as Chair of the Curriculum & Instruction Program. He led the effort to align C&I coursework with the requirements for Professional Certification for Teachers, and he worked with Bill Nagy and Scott Beers to develop the new M.Ed. in Literacy. Students can continue to earn a M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction in Teaching and Learning. We are delighted that Andrew Lumpe has agreed to serve as the new Chair of the Curriculum & Instruction Program.

Name Changes
  • The Center for Global Curriculum Studies (CGCS) is the new name for the Doctoral Program's International Center for Curriculum Studies. This new name is reflective of the Center's emphasis on global education. Students new to the Doctoral Program are required to complete a course on global education. Art Ellis continues as the Director of the Center.

  • The name of the School of Education's Continuing Education Unit has been changed to the Center for Professional Education (CPE) to better reflect the varied programs implemented by this unit. Dan Bishop continues as the Director of the Center.

I trust this information is helpful as you plan for this academic year. Please feel free to contact our faculty and staff when you have questions or concerns. We are here to assist you in any way we can. Have a great year!

William J. Rowley
