WASHINGTON EDUCATOR SKILLS TEST - BASIC (WEST-B)


The State of Washington requires all individuals who receive a residency teaching certificate pass the Washington Education Skills Test - Basic (WEST-B). The WEST-B consists of three separate subtests: reading, mathematics, and writing. A student must pass all three sections of the WEST-B test before beginning the Methods Quarter. WASHINGTON EDUCATOR SKILLS TEST - ENDORSEMENT (WEST-E)

To receive a teaching certificate in the State of Washington, a candidate must pass the WEST-E test in their endorsement. Seattle Pacific University offers endorsements in the following areas:

  • English
  • English/Language Arts
  • Family and Consumer Science
  • Health and Fitness
  • History
  • Mathematics
  • Middle Level Humanities
  • Middle Level Math
  • Middle Level Science

  • Instrumental

       Sciences (5 endorsements)

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Earth Science
  • Physics
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Spanish
  • Special Education
  • Theater Arts
  • Visual Arts

       World Languages

  • French
  • German
  • Spanish

All students being recommended for an endorsement on a Residency Certificate must pass the appropriate Washington Educator's Skills Test-Endorsement (WEST-E). Passing the test, along with the appropriate methods course(s) and internship, qualifies a person for an endorsement. Information regarding WEST-E tests and registration can be found at www.west.nesinc.com.

The new WEST-E was phased in beginning 9/1/2008. Please check with the Certification Coordinator (281-2214) to verify you are taking the correct test.
