Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loans

Graduate students may utilize a Federal Direct PLUS Loan up to their cost of attendance minus other financial assistance. Approval of a Graduate PLUS loan requires a credit check. Repayment begins within 60 days of the last disbursement of the loan. However, the loan will be placed in deferment while you are enrolled at least half time and for an additional six months after you cease to be enrolled at least half time.

Applicants for these loans are required to complete the FAFSA. They also must have applied for their annual loan maximum eligibility under the Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan program before applying for a Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan.

If you have been awarded a Graduate PLUS Loan for the first time, note the following:

  • You must complete a Master Promissory Note (MPN). The original MPN will be used for all the years you attend SPU.
  • You must complete a Loan Counseling Session.
  • A loan exit interview is required prior to your graduation from SPU or when your enrollment drops to less than half-time status.
Basic facts about this loan can be found on the Employment and Loan Programs Chart (PDF). More information can be found in the Student Financial Services office and here.
