Health Insurance Plan for U.S. Citizens 2007–08
Seattle Pacific University offers a health insurance plan designed for students attending SPU. All students are encouraged — who are uninsured or whose plan may not have providers in this area — to take advantage of this plan. Today's high cost of medical care makes health insurance essential to reduce the concern of unexpected health care needs and expenses.
Underwritten by MEGA Life and Health Insurance Company, the policy (pdf) provides major medical benefit up to $48,500 for each injury or sickness at reasonable rates: $974 annual premium (12-month insurance) or $272 per quarter. The same plan is available for dependents of insured students at comparable low premiums.
Coverage is available to all new and returning students and their dependents. If you would like additional information, and enrollment form (pdf), or clarification on the Student Injury and Sickness Plan, contact the plan's service representatives at:

Health Insurance Plan for International Students 2007–08
Seattle Pacific University offers a health insurance plan designed for the international student attending SPU. This plan is with LewerMark, a national company with an excellent network of local preferred health care providers. Their plans call for minimal cash copayments ($15 per office visit, $50 hospital) rather than complicated "deductible" formulas. Most health care expenses will be paid at 100 percent after copayment for students who use providers in the network, and 80 percent for students choosing non-network providers. Of course, we also encourage use of the SPU Health Services as a first resource. The nurses can provide basic care and referral to local providers as needed.
Notable Plan Features
- Insurance coverage 30 days before initial enrollment at SPU and 30 days after program completion. This will be useful to students who may get sick as they arrive or those who need insurance during the transition after graduation.
- An option for students to continue their coverage while they do post-completion Optional Practical Training.
- Access to a 24/7 Nursing Hotline (1-800-769-1259) and in the caller's native language if requested!
- This plan does not cover birth control medication.
All SPU international students are required to subscribe to the plan unless they apply for a waiver with documentation of adequate insurance in Health Services during the first 10 days of any quarter. All continuing international students will be enrolled in a health insurance plan for every quarter, including summers, until they graduate or otherwise leave the University. All international students are expected to schedule an exit interview with the international student advisor early in their last quarter of study at SPU in order to properly notify the University of their exit.
If an international student can document that he or she has comparable coverage by an alternative health plan, this requirement can be waived by presenting such proof to the Health Center Manager in Watson Hall 1st floor.
Further information about LewerMark and this plan can be found by calling 1-800-821-7710.
Spouse only $735/quarter
Each Dependant Child $228/quarter
A $5 administrative fee is charged per student on a quarterly basis.
