SAS Msg 5 Response

Point of Contact: Ruth Adams

CSOT Department/Area: Student Academic Services

What now?

  • Are you and your staff prepared for bad weather conditions?Yes, most of us have emergency bags or items in our cars.
  • Until you can get back into your building, what actions do you need to take in the next hour? Next two hours? We would focus on what the university needs are, helping where we can and assist with students.  We would need to be prepared for serving students needs; setting up a make-shift Registration if necessary to collect paperwork, etc.
  • Does your plan outline with whom you should meet (e.g. any other CSOT members, etc.) in order to coordinate a response or to address the needs of employees and students?  SAS would connect with OSL staff to see where we can assist with students departing campus and tracking their whereabouts.  How will you contact them?  We would go to them. Is this information listed in your departmental plan?  No, but it will be!  Our expectations need to include where each staff person is deployed and how we will stay in touch with each other.
  • List by name all essential personnel you will have stay on campus overnight.  Will they need housing (once available)? Are any student employees on the list? No students will stay from SAS.  Ruth Adams is the essential personnel and likely BEC Ben Weins.  3 other SAS staff will be identified to stay based on current needs and situations.
  • Based on new information what issues or new questions have emerged, particularly as you begin to address ECMT’s question to CSOT about the extent of the campus closure  -- for tomorrow (TH), the remainder of the week (TH-Sun), or beyond? SAS recommendation is that if classrooms are not accessible, then classes are cancelled.  For the university to actually close would be determined by whether personal needs can be taken care of and that the assignments and work required (such as, helping with communication to the community, clean up, etc) is possible for staff and faculty to assist with.  Otherwise, if staff who live close by are housing folks from the SPU community, they are serving that need.

With night approaching, what options open for illumination and warmth if buildings not open?  Cars have headlights and can provide shelter and warmth.
