CSOT Department/Area: Human Resources
Sorry for the delay today, I am now home from an outpatient medical procedure.
Ironically, April 29 was also a day I was out sick (rare for me), and Kathleen normally has Wednesday's off. So our staff for the day included Jackie Belz, Mardeth Hughes, Carrie McCrimmon, and at different times one of our two student workers.
What now?
- Did you remember to drop, cover, and hold? At 8:40am on a Wednesday, everyone was most likely in their own office, and would have immediately dropped down under their desk and away from any windows where glass could break.
- Do you know where your buildings’ evacuation location is? Yes, everyone knows that the Alumni parking lot is our evacuation place, with the track/field behind Brougham as a backup if needed.
- What will you take with you when you leave the building? Create a list of what you take with you. The BEC would grab our red emergency bag which includes a first aid kit and radio, and depending upon the weather also bring some of our emergency blankets and food. Everyone would also bring personal phones, purses etc.
- What will you do when you arrive at the evacuation location? At the evacuation site the BEC would first take note of who is there/missing, and also check for injuries. They would then radio in to SAS to report evacuation status and any injuries
- What will you do with the injured? Do everything we can to tend to any injuries immediately. If necessary contact SAS or 911 for serious injuries. Since phones may be inoperative, we may have to do our best with no outside help for a time. This could include finding someone in Athletics who has further medical training, and/or sending a runner over to the Health Center for a medically trained person. Otherwise we sit tight in the Alumni parking lot and do our best for those around us.
- How will you check in with your family members? Do you have an family communication plan? Can attempt to call of text family via cell phone, but that will quickly become impossible. We have a rudimentary family plan involving two backup locations to meet later
- What actions do you need to take in the next hour? Next two hours? Taking care of the people in our evacuation location is first priority. As necessary, will circulate to assist with triage, and identify most badly injured (if any) -- attempt to provide basic first aid, contact outside professional help, and also circulate to see if any medically trained people are in the area. If possible, help people make calls to family. Carrie would know that I (Gary) is not there today, so she will be the HR rep who will go to CSOT if called. In the meantime I (Gary) will be attempting to contact Carrie or other HR team members via cell phone to check in with them from home.
