Thanks Jeff, I’ve forwarded a follow up question to Jean Brown which outlined the building priority currently in place. If all buildings on campus need to be reviewed by the structural engineers, the current priority is 1) Ashton, 2) Emerson 3) Gwinn, 4) Hill, 5) Moyer. So with this in mind …. And knowing that by 9:00 AM the structural engineers have not yet arrived (and we’re not sure when they will .. . this comes out later in the exercise)… we’ve asked Jean to let us know where the first aid station will be set up as people are needing medical assistance. Then .. how this location will be communicated to Safety and Security (and S&S will notify BEC’s). At this time --- we don’t know when or if Gwinn will be available?
One of the challenges for your roll is that you also represent Academic Affairs on CSOT --- so a question to you is how will the deans and library be contacted to learn their status. We know in the Northridge earthquake – major damage occurred to the library (all books off the shelves). So from 9-11 AM .. while you are in ECMT, how do you imagine information reach deans, librarian, other key OAA leadership (to be identified)…. Is there a communication plan to learn what is going on and what is needed to become operational once again?
Thanks for your thoughts what plans exist to connect with the deans and librarian.

Will Les be at ECMT? I wasn’t thinking that I would have responsibility for academic buildings and programs, but this is why we do this exercise. Right???

Thanks Dave C.
For this exercise, we will move forward on the assumption plans will be inspected as outlined in the FPM plan. However, I have noted this as an item for future discussion, perhaps at future ECMT meeting, to review the concerns which have emerged during this exercise.
One of the hoped for outcomes of this exercise was to identify potential gaps or points we may want to revisit to determine if we’re all in agreement on what is in the current plan. So I’m glad this item surfaced – so we can review the thinking behind the decisions.

Jeff, Yes, Les or his designate will be at ECMT. If Les in not available, who is his back-up on ECMT? I’m not sure that is identified. I also see how we involve the deans and library in recovering after a disaster as a gap in current planning. While your position was originally tapped to represent OAA and OSL on CSOT – does this work in a real situation? If you and Les are pulled into ECMT meetings, who is working with deans and the library about getting themselves operational again? While each school has an emergency recovery plan, no such tool exists for the library.
We need the schools and library to think through disaster recovery plans and know how to fit into the University’s ECMT plan --- but how are the connected to the process? Through you and CSOT? Are you spread too thin in an emergency and if so, who should be tapped to work through the issues? Another group external to CSOT and ECMT? I’m not sure who would work through issues with them. It might be fair to say at this point we have a gap in our current planning which needs to be discussed/resolved. What do you suggest?

I’m not sure I have the answers. I’m happy to talk with Les about these issues. As far as the library, I can tell you that I will look at the library as a facility to utilize as necessary in case of an emergency. This may mean it will house students, be a central place for meals, may be a counseling center. Much depends on needs of the campus at the time. I believe we need a good assessment of that building early on since it is a newer building with (hopefully) more seismic stable structure. (Weter may be in a similar category since it was built to hold a great deal of weight as a library.) Now, as far as the library becoming operational again as a library, that would be Bryce’s responsibility. I haven’t had any conversation with him regarding plans, though.
As far as someone overseeing more the academic deans and academic program, Les would be the main person. I’m guessing the secondary person is Cindy Price. However, I do know that Student Life will tap some faculty (Health Sciences, Theology and Psychology as some examples) for some of our responses depending on need, availability, etc.
