Dining Services Msg 4 Response

Point of Contact: Kim Karstens

CSOT Department/Area: Sodexho

What now?

  • Before students leave, have you identified a need for volunteers to assist in recovery efforts for your area? How will you recruit volunteers?

Will assess which Sodexo employees and student employees for dining services can stay on site and assist with emergency food/beverage services.

  • Have you begun assessing the impact of the quake to your area? Have you addressed staff availability (who needs to go home tonight versus who needs to stay)?

No, will have to wait until the building is released for occupancy.  We will have addressed staff availability and who needs to remain on site or return at a set time.

  • List your essential personnelthose who may be required to staff through the night.

    Managers and cooks.

  • Are your staff/students or others around you in need of pastoral care, counseling services?  What is your plan for helping them in gaining assistance?

We will inform our employees through communication updates that pastoral care will be available in Tiffany Loop.  We will allow people to leave if they are not required for emergency food services; or we can provide shifts for employees to rotate.

  • Shelter/warmth, food, water and restrooms on campus are still unavailable as the buildings are not yet open.  How will you deal with these issues for those who stay?

The CSOT will have a plan for this and I'll assist with the steps needed.  Food/beverages from the emergency supply could be accessed and distributed due to the 5-6 hours to enter into the dining hall.  Make-shift restrooms can be created if we have large plastic garbage bags, tarps and rope in the emergency supply.  May want to have kitty litter for these bags.  In the emergency supply, we may have emergency blankets to use/distribute.  Students/friends with cars can waitn in their cars to keep warm.  Other option is to create a fire pit to have students keep warm.  We have a gas barbecue, which will be used for cooking.  Students that are remaining on campus can be given assignements to keep focused and busy during the wait.  They can assist with first aide stations, transporting supplies, etc.

  • Have your priorities changed?

Yes, will have to arrange for meal service outside, until Gwinn is inspected.

  • What actions do you need to take in the next hour? Next two hours?

Attend CSOT meetings and provide a plan for emergency food/beverage service, assess staff and assignements for transport, preparation and service of emergency storage supplies and waste collection.  Plan for next 2 meals.

  • Have any issues or new questions emerged?
    1. Yes, where will the food be prepared and served?  What are the supplys in the emergency storage unit: food/beverages/cooking supplies -pots, pans, ladels, spoons, tong, towels, hand sanitizer, gloves and service ware.  How many meals can be supplied?  What is the minimum staffing levels to provide this service?
    2. How will the emergency supplies be transported across campus (by hand, truck, etc.) assuming roads are blocked with cars?
    3. If the resident halls are opened, will we move everyone into the hall and serve food by the halls?
    4. What supplies do we have for make shift restrooms and to keep people warm?
    5. Do we have fuel for the barbecue?
