What Now questions:

  • Before students leave, have you identified a need for volunteers to assist in recovery efforts for your area? How will you recruit volunteers?
    1. Need for volunteers:
      • To help minister to others
      • To help recover items from SUB and other locations once allowed back into the buildings
    2. Recruit Volunteers:
      • To the best of our ability, be in communication with our Student Ministry Coordinators and students involved in the ministries (appx.120 people) to ascertain who is close and can be of help providing for ministry concerns
  • Have you begun assessing the impact of the quake to your area?
    1. Impact on persons – ongoing pastoral care and concern for all those involved
    2. Services - cancelled group for tonight, GospelFest 09 on Saturday; looking ahead to next week
    3. Verbal discussions on what is in the SUB and other locations that we need to get out; sound equipment, etc.
  • Have you addressed staff availability (who needs to go home tonight versus who needs to stay)? Currently still only have Deb and KT onsite – Bob and Stephen are attempting to get to campus – Matthew is at home with his daughter. Deb and KT plan to stay onsite (not possible for Deb to get to her home in north Snohomish county – rode the bus in to work). Will asses others’ ability to get here – and once they are here, can then determine protocol for who does what – accounting for rest periods as well
  • List your essential personnelthose who may be required to staff through the night.  All of 5 of our staff are essential personnel – Stephen and Matthew have children at home adding to their concerns for family. All staff members able to be on site should plan to stay through the night.
  • Are your staff/students or others around you in need of pastoral care, counseling services?  What is your plan for helping them in gaining assistance? Our assumption is that we have been providing pastoral care since the onset of this event.  ur plan is to be sure campus members are aware that we are available in the Loop and to go to other locations as deemed appropriate/necessary. we will, at this time, establish the hourly gatherings for prayer and support – see below.
  •  Shelter/warmth, food, water and restrooms on campus are still unavailable as the buildings are not yet open.  How will you deal with these issues for those who stay?
    1. Create makeshift restrooms site in the Loop
    2. Food and Water – “fishes and loaves” – who has what and how much to share – establish protocol for sharing with others in location
  • Have your priorities changed?    Shifting from triage/physical safety concerns to immediate pastoral care – meeting emotional and spiritual needs of individuals on site
  • What actions do you need to take in the next hour? Incorporate regular prayer -  praying the hours –organizing a time each hour for prayer and petition as well as announcements and other communications. Assuring others that we are in community- not alone in our trauma – and are supporting one another. Give sense of clarity and consistency in the midst of the confusion, chaos and uncertainty
  •  Next two hours?
    1. Consistent delivery of prayer each hour
    2. Assess other needs based on current information provided by OSS/CSOT
  • Have any issues or new questions emerged? Beginning to realize that this is an opportunity to minister in this new context: our task is to focus people on the spiritual as well as physical concerns
