It is now 11:30am. Approximately 4,500 people assembled in evacuation locations. Many students have left the area but about 2,500 hundred remain on campus. They continue to ask for information on the school’s closure plans. Many are distraught because that they can’t get through to family and friends on the phone. BECs begin to relay requests to Security regarding plans for shelter, food and water.
FPM reports that the structural engineers on retainer have arrived at campus and begun an assessment of campus buildings in accordance with their prioritized list.
Update -- FPM’s plan is to have the structural engineers screen Ashton, Emerson, Gwinn, Hill, and Moyer in that order. These first three buildings will take 2 structural engineers 5-6 hours to assess.
Security relays a message to Health Services: a BEC from the Alumni Center has requested medical assistance for a student that hit her head during the earthquake. She didn’t report it immediately because she thought she’d be okay, however she now has a headache and is feeling dizzy. The BEC doesn’t think she should be moved.
Update – Health Center has set up operations at their evacuation site outside. Back up supplies are accessible only from supplies stored at Safety & Security (building is operational during this exercise) or in Gwinn once it has been are cleared for occupancy.
Update – Center for Worship: The plan is to meet with people in Tiffany Loop unless they are unable to get to this location.
Power remains out in Marston/Watson, Moyer, Peterson and the Library.
At noon, the ECMT decides to close campus for the day. They will decide to close campus for the rest of the week based on reports from FPM and CSOT members. The closure is announced via radio to the BECs who use megaphone to announce it to the community. Residential students that cannot leave campus are asked to remain at the evacuation location until shelter arrangements can be made or the residence halls are opened.
What now?*
- Before students leave, have you identified a need for volunteers to assist in recovery efforts for your area? How will you recruit volunteers?
- Have you begun assessing the impact of the quake to your area? Have you addressed staff availability (who needs to go home tonight versus who needs to stay)?
- List your essential personnel.
- Have your priorities changed?
- What actions do you need to take in the next hour? Next two hours?
- Have any issues or new questions emerged?
