BECs are inundated with requests for updates: are classes canceled; can they leave campus; why can’t they go back into buildings? There are many demands for water and food from the crowd as well. Security updates the BECs that classes have not been cancelled yet and that no one is allowed to enter a campus building until further notice.
At 10:03 a loud explosion is heard in front of Emerson followed by the power going out in Moyer, Marston, Watson, Peterson, and the Library. Moyer and Marston are on generator backup.
Emergency services have closed all bridges into Seattle until an assessment can be done. They anticipate many bridges will be closed till 12:00pm. Area roads are congested. Traffic along the Nickerson/Westlake Corridor quickly becomes backed up.
The most severe quake damage appears to be in downtown Olympia, Pioneer Square and SODO districts in Seattle. The Legislative Building, SeaTac Airport control tower, Boeing Field runways, and Alaskan Way Viaduct have significant damage. Outside emergency assistance may not be available for several days because of higher priority response needs elsewhere in the city/county/state.
Health Services has established a First Aid Station. Security is able to relay the location to BECs through their radios and text messaging. They have begun treating many of the injuries; no major injuries have been reported. HS may need assistance from faculty in the School of Health Sciences.
The ECMT’s priorities include determining whether the campus should close for the day or for several days. How soon will the residence halls be approved for occupancy? How many people are injured?
