It is now 20 minutes after the earthquake. Power and other utilities were not interrupted by the quake. The on-campus telephone and computing systems are operational, however calls to off campus locations are currently unable to go through due to massive call volumes. Cell phone lines quickly became overwhelmed and no one can get a call out or in. Text messaging continues to work with occasional service interruption.
Building Emergency Coordinators have begun the accountability process. They remain in radio contact with OSS. Over the next 20 to 30 minutes BECs begin reporting various injuries among faculty, staff and students. Some injuries are treatable from their BEC kit first aid supplies but about twenty people need greater medical care than the BECs can give, primarily involving some cuts and contusions. The BECs radio to Security with the information and request the location of the First Aid Station.
According to the SPU Emergency & Crisis Management Plan, the ECMT will meet in the Emergency Operations Center, located at the Office of Safety and Security. At some point during the day, they will want a status report from your area.
The shake is determined to be magnitude 6.9 and originated on a fault line north of Seattle. There is significant shake damage throughout the region and emergency medical services are overwhelmed.
