SBE sponsors chapel series on the "Theology of Work "

This quarter, the School of Business and Economics has taken the lead in organizing the speakers for the gather chapel events.  The theme of "Theology of Work" gets at the often overlooked fact that God is vitally interested in all aspects of our lives, and our daily work and vocation is a huge area that we might overlook as a setting for the work of His Kingdom.  Consider joining us for these remaining gather events at 9:30 a.m. at First Free Methodist Church.

May 18: Roger Bairstow  “Growing Fruit that Will Last: a business-as-ministry story”

May 25: Grant Learned & Ted Schroth "Capitalists Glorifying God"

June 1: John Terrill “The Promise of Heaven for our Earthly Work” A discussion of work and the New Creation.

SBE Honors and Scholarship Luncheon, Tuesday the 18th

Our annual honors luncheon is scheduled for this Tuesday, May 18th.  After the lunch itself, the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society will induct our top undergraduate and graduate students into the society. Their names are already listed on their web page.  Beta Gamma Sigma is the business school equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa in colleges of arts and sciences, and may only be awarded by AACSB accredited schools

SPU business graduate Glenn Lurie is our speaker for this invitation-only honors luncheon.  Glenn is now President of Emerging Devices, Resale and Partnerships for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. He leads AT&T’s strategic initiative to drive innovation in bringing wireless connectivity to new devices and applications. Mr. Lurie also has responsibilities for AT&T’s on-going operations and relationship with Apple Inc., having led negotiations to bring the iPhone and iPhone 3G to AT&T.

SBE at the Mariners, Wednesday, May 19th, 7:10pm

Join SBE faculty, staff, and students for a fun evening at the ball park! Tickets are $10.  You may come up and purchase tickets from our front desk on the 2nd floor of McKenna.

SBE Graduation Banquet, Thursday May 27th, 6:00pm

CONGRATULATIONS to the SBE graduating class of 2010!  We’d like to celebrate your accomplishment with a banquet in your honor.  Join your fellow seniors and SBE faculty, for the annual Senior Graduation Banquet at Ray’s Boathouse (yes, this is fancy)!  Tickets are $25, and are on sale in McKenna. When an AUSBE representative is not present, you may come up and purchase tickets from our front desk. And you don't need to be graduating to attend.  All SBE students are invited.

Work in the McKenna Computer Lab next year

The McKenna Computer Lab is staffed by both graduate and undergraduate students.  With the pending graduation of 75% of the current lab staff, positions are wide open for next year.  Students typically work 6 to 10 hours each week and work schedules are adjusted each quarter to take into account your class schedule.  The lab is open Monday-Thursday 10:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Fridays 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Interested students should contact Dr. Dick Sleight, SBE Manager of Information Systems.  Applications are being accepted this month.

 Advising & Registration

Taking summer courses elsewhere?  Here's what to watch out for.

From Debbie Crouch, Associate Director of Academic Advising:

If you plan to complete coursework through another institution—whether in the U.S. or abroad—you must consult with a faculty advisor (your regular advisor for courses from U.S. schools; Dr. Downing for study abroad courses) and an academic counselor before enrolling in classes.  Approval for transfer of classes from other schools is obtained by completing this form.

Your faculty advisor approves courses you plan to transfer toward major and/or minor requirements.  Academic counselors will ensure that:

  • the transfer institution is accredited;

  • the courses selected are transferable and will fulfill requirements as intended (e.g., Exploratory Curriculum, foreign language, etc.);

  • you are not attempting to repeat a class for which you already earned credit at SPU;

  • you are enrolling in no more than 20 credits per quarter;

  • the cumulative credit limit for community college coursework will not be exceeded; and

  • you understand minimum grades required and procedures for transferring credit to SPU.

We want to make sure you spend your money on classes that actually will transfer to SPU and fulfill degree requirements!

Advice from your SBE Undergraduate Coordinator, Elizabeth Gordon

Not admitted into one of our majors yet?

All upper division SBE courses will be restricted to you (they have “major-restriction” holds on them). If you are intending to apply to one of our majors next Winter, and have taken all lower division SBE courses available, please email Elizabeth Gordon (eg@spu.edu) and request your GPA be calculated for admission into upper division courses. If you are considered “on track” for admission next year she will lift restrictions for you.

Business, Economics, or Entrepreneurship Minor?

Although required for completion of your minor, many of our courses have “major-restrictions”.  Prior to registering for these courses you will need to contact the Undergraduate Coordinator in SBE, Elizabeth Gordon, who can remove major restriction holds for you. You may email her at eg@spu.edu, as soon as you have made your schedule for the following quarter. Do your best not to wait until registration week, or it may delay your ability to register for the classes you need.

All SBE Majors Accountable for Writing Competency Requirement and Signature Experience Requirement. Have you started yet?

From the SPU 2009-10 Undergraduate Catalog:

 Writing Competency Requirement

All SBE majors (accounting, business administration, and economics) must meet the writing competency requirement listed below:

  • SBE majors with a score of 5 or 6 on the English Placement assessment or exam will satisfy the writing competency requirement and are not required to complete the extra writing requirements listed below. Also, these students are not required to take ENG 2201 Intermediate College Writing.

  • SBE majors (and other SPU students) with a score of 4 or below on the English Placement assessment or exam are required to take ENG 2201 Intermediate College Writing. These students should take ENG 2201 by the first quarter of their sophomore year so they can be considered for admission to an SBE major during Winter Quarter of that year. Students with a grade of B or better in ENG 2201 will satisfy the writing competency requirement.

  • SBE majors with a grade of B- or below in ENG 2201 must complete BUS 2601 Business Writing Tutorial and earn a grade of B or better.

  • Transfer students who have not previously taken a college composition course must take the English Placement exam, and they must meet the same requirements outlined above for freshmen. Note: The writing competency requirement took effect for freshmen entering SPU beginning Autumn Quarter 2004 and transfer students entering SPU beginning Autumn Quarter 2005.

 Signature Experience Requirement

SBE is committed to providing an educational experience that is grounded in Christian faith, ethics, and character. It is also committed to providing a business education that works well "on the ground" in our increasingly global environment.

To strengthen these commitments, students graduating with a major in business administration must satisfy the SBE Signature Experience Requirement by completing one of these options:

  • Complete and enter a business plan in an appropriate business or social venture plan competition. This can include on-campus competitions or competitions sponsored by other schools or organizations. This requirement is typically met by participating in the business-planning sequence.

  • Participate in an approved study abroad program, such as SPU Business Abroad, the CCCU Latin American Studies program, or another SPU program (e.g., the European Studies quarter). This must be a program where students receive academic credit. In lieu of an international experience, a student may apply to the SBE undergraduate committee to meet this requirement with a suitable cross-cultural experience in the United States.

  • Complete 3 credits of BUS 3950 Spirituality and Business.

  • Complete an honors project as part of the University Scholars program.

  • With the approval of the SBE Undergraduate Committee, participate in a business-related CCCU American Studies Program, Contemporary Music Program, Film Studies Program, or other comparable program.

Note: In most cases, the credits earned while completing the Signature Experience Requirement also meet another requirement of the business administration major.  The signature experience requirement applies to students who are admitted to the School of Business and Economics starting with the 2007–08 academic year.
