Peter Drucker Workshop

On October 17, about 80 people attended a one-day workshop hosted by CIB at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, IL. The workshop took place in advance of the Christian Business Faculty Association's national conference.

Anticipating the pressing societal problems that business must help solve, we explored Peter Drucker's vision of pursuing "management as a liberal art." According to Drucker, the world needs more than technical experts in business; we need leaders who can think across disciplines and lead people with integrity.

Presentations were given by Bill Pollard (former chair and CEO of ServiceMaster, via video) and Joseph Maciariello (leading Drucker scholar and professor of management at Claremont Graduate University). In addition, Gloria Nelund (chair and CEO of TriLinc Global), Shundrawn Thomas (managing director for Northern Trust Global Investments), and Steve Tourek (senior vice president and general counsel at Marvin Windows and Doors) presented practical applications for business.

Watch for video clips of this workshop on CIB's YouTube channel.

Senior Leaders' Weekend: The Busy Life vs. The Good Life

At the end of September, CIB hosted a group of 24 leaders at Alderbrook Resort and Spa for a weekend of challenge and reflection on what consitutes "the good life." Linda Wagener and Rick Beaton of Marigold Associates presented research, theology, and exercises to help deconstruct the busy life, address core issues of the heart, and develop practices to deepen life-faith integration. If interested in being a part of a future retreat, please contact us at CIB@spu.edu.

Spiritual Capital and Spiritual Formation

CIB has commissioned a study among business leaders on the impact of spiritual formation and spiritual capital on organizational performance. The study, directed by Bruce Baker, assistant professor of business ethics, is in conjunction with a new graduate-level course in the School of Business and Economics: “Spiritual Formation for Management and Organizations.” Several Puget Sound-area companies are participating in the research. To learn more about this project and how your company can get involved, email Dr. Bruce Baker (bakerb@spu.edu).
