Continuing Students: Major & Minor Information
How do I apply for my major?
All students must be formally admitted to, and complete, a major to earn a degree. If a student decides to complete a minor, the student must formally apply to and be admitted to the minor, as well.
- It is your responsibility to apply for a major or minor through the department or school in which your intended major/minor is offered.
- You can either obtain a major/minor application form from the administrative assistant of the department or school in which your area of interest is offered, or download a generic major application form (PDF).
- The school or department will determine whether or not you are officially accepted to the major/minor.
- Acceptance into many majors/minors requires a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher.
When do I apply for my major?
You should formally apply for acceptance to your major by the end of your sophomore year. If you transferred to SPU with junior or senior standing, you should apply for acceptance to your major after you have completed 20 credits at SPU and have met any other requirements for admission to the major.
Do I need a new advisor for my major?
If your faculty advisor is from a department or school outside your area of interest, you must request a new advisor. Enter the Banner Information System and choose “Student Menu” followed by “Academic Progress Menu,” which includes the online Change of Advisor option.
Changes in your major/minor may be made by contacting the administrative assistant in the school or department which offers your new intended major or minor. It may be necessary to go through a new application process.

Are there additional requirements for my major?
Requirements for majors, minors, and programs are listed in the SPU Undergraduate Catalog. Major/minor requirements are often revised from year to year. It is important for you to be aware that you are responsible to meet the major/minor requirements listed in the Catalog that is current at the time that you formally apply and are accepted to a major/minor (e.g., if you are accepted into a major in Winter 2008, major requirements listed in the 2007–08 SPU Undergraduate Catalog must be fulfilled.
