PhysTEC at Seattle Pacific University

What is PhysTEC?

The Physics Teacher Education Coalition (PhysTEC) is an intentional effort to build working relationships between the major contributors to the development of physical science teachers: the science department, the education department, and the regional school systems. These new relationships are focused on
improved recruiting and training of physical science teachers to greatly increase the pool of high quality teachers.

Program Overview

SPU PhysTEC Project Components:

Adapting the Physics Curriculum
We are providing introductory classes that use interactive engagement techniques and are informed by research in physics education.

PhysTEC Courses
We are offering classes that examine the pedagogy behind the introductory classes and explore current issues in pre-college science education.

Teachers Advisory Group (TAG)
One piece of the PhysTEC program is the formation of a Teachers Advisory Group (TAG) of local pre-college physics and physical science teachers. The purpose of this group is twofold:

  1. To help us become better informed about the needs and perspectives of local teachers.
  2. To serve as a review committee and reality check for proposed programs that serve in-service teachers and prepare pre-service teachers.
