Community Partners: UYLA
More About the Urban Youth Leadership Academy
The Urban Youth Leadership Academy (UYLA) is an initiative of the John Perkins Center at Seattle Pacific University.Urban youth are uniquely equipped for global-urban ministry. They grow up in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-lingual context. They know how to navigate systems that are not necessarily “user friendly”. They have an inherent sense of the value of community.
In partnership with local churches, organizations and schools, we provide leadership development and training encouraging multicultural youth and young adults to engage in their communities, pursue higher education, and serve in the global urban context perpetuating the cycle of community development.
This diverse community of student leaders is prepared to model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the hearts of others through community-based partnership projects.
Each project reflects the UYLA core values and program philosophy while addressing the specific needs/goals of our partners, allowing for flexibility as we engage new opportunities and challenges within the community.
Though we hope to see many of our UYLA students matriculate into SPU, our intention is to engage, educate, and empower more students than can possibly be accepted into one institution. In doing so, we benefit our city, state, nation and world.
