By Philip W. Eaton, SPU President
Leadership is on my mind these days. Presidential candidates, school superintendents, CEOs, and coaches are all touting their leadership credentials. But what defines a good leader? And perhaps more importantly for our purposes as a university: How do we develop strong leaders?
Seattle Pacific University is one of the world’s leading Christian universities, and we do our work in the midst of one of the world’s most innovative cities. Surely we have something to offer in terms of leadership development. Surely we can shape our students into leaders who will change the world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Recently a person of influence said to me, “I run into SPU students everywhere. They are out there, leading the way, wherever I go.” What a compliment! And so true. In education, business, health care, the arts, and more — our faculty, staff, students, and alumni are out there solving problems, creating products and programs, influencing policies, and helping those in need. They are leaders.
At Seattle Pacific University we believe that every student is a leader. Every student has the potential to apply the skills and competencies they learn here and use those abilities to serve the world. And, really, that’s what leadership is about: serving.
Parents, thank you for partnering with us to teach and model faithful Christian leadership and scholarship. Together we are working to ensure that every SPU student becomes a leader who will change the world.
