SPU Alcohol Policy Clarification

President EatonYou may hear from your son or daughter that I have just sent out a Message From The President to our campus community. You can go to the message through this link.

What I am trying to do here is clarify both our strong commitment to Christian community (we call it grace-filled community) and some of our policies around standards of behavior. I am most interested in strengthening our ongoing and historical commitment to healthy lives and flourishing community. As you know, we believe all of this comes out of our Christian tradition and teaching.

New Trust and Responsibility

You will see that we are placing new trust in our undergraduate students, hoping to guide them toward responsible and maturing choices. Students of legal age will now be able to make their own choices about use of alcohol off campus.

We will ask these students to use the same kind of discernment as our faculty and staff and graduate students, seeking to be guided by the teaching of their families and their churches.

Our campus will remain dry, our alcohol education program will become even stronger, and of course underage students will be required to observe the law and strict SPU policy against drinking.

We believe this new clarity will guide our students toward responsible choices. I wanted you to be aware of what we are doing, and I encourage you to read the email message I just sent out.

Committed to High Standards

I know you join me in our efforts to navigate a sometimes confusing and complex world in which we live. In the midst of it all, we seek at SPU to build a community of grace and love and trust, holding up our high standards of living together in Christian community.

We are heading down the stretch of another wonderful year. Thank you for being part of our community. I will see many of you at our Commencement celebrations. I trust all of you will have a restful and renewing summer season.

Philip W. Eaton
