Every time I open a newspaper or turn on the television these days, a political candidate is making another promise. We are all trying to sort out which — if any— of these promises we can trust. Right?
I believe any university ought carefully to consider what it is promising and then do everything possible to keep those promises. I want you to know that at Seattle Pacific University, we try so very hard to sort out our commitments and take them seriously.
In that spirit, we have identified five signature commitments that define who we are. And then we try to lift up those commitments so that they may serve as a guide for all we do. Here are our signature promises:
To Understand
We need to help our students know and understand what’s going on in the world. Here, your student will have the opportunity to be involved in cutting-edge research, hands-on service projects, and high-level internships. Your student will also have the privilege of hearing top-notch speakers from all over the world who come to campus. We even have local and national newspapers (at no cost to readers) available all across campus.
To Embrace
In a world where many people have a limited grasp of Scripture, we are trying very intentionally to help our students embrace the Christian story, becoming biblically and theologically educated. Through classes, chapel events, and discipleship programs, your student will encounter the hope of the gospel by studying the Bible.
To Learn
We are a premier, national, Christian university with students and faculty who are among the best and brightest anywhere. Your student will receive a rigorous education and be part of a vibrant intellectual community.
To Model Community
At Seattle Pacific we are committed to treating each other with respect and living in what we call grace-filled community. That’s a huge deal for us. Here, your student will learn to reach across barriers of all sorts by learning to practice radical reconciliation. We want to model what it means to live and work in Christian community.
To Graduate
We’ll help your student master an area of study, earn a degree, and leave this place to go out in the world with a vision of how to make the world a better place. That’s our big idea — that we can help equip our great students to change the world. Our graduates are highly competent people with strong character who make a difference wherever they go.
Thank you for trusting us to partner with you. I look forward to working with you in the days and years ahead. You can count on it: We are working on these promises.
