Beachcombing for Data

Seattle Pacific University senior Alli Cutting had an amazing summer on the beach, but she wasn't swimming or relaxing. Instead, rain or shine, she spent hours taking notes and video, watching seagulls dine on starfish.

During the summer of 2012, Cutting (an ecology major), and Associate Professor of Biology Ryan Ferrer regularly traveled to one of six Puget Sound beaches to observe glaucous-winged gulls' behavior attacking a specific breed of starfish.

Join Your Student for Homecoming!
Homecoming weekend is January 30 to February 1, 2014, and we welcome our Seattle Pacific University family back to campus. As a parent of an SPU student, you are part of the family, and there are several events that may interest you.


  • Enjoy the Homecoming Student Talent Show on Friday night. This event is consistently packed with humor and true talent!
  • Be inspired at the Homecoming Luncheon, where alumni award winners share their inspiring stories and President Daniel J. Martin offers remarks.
  • Attend the Theatre Department's production of “The Miracle Worker.”
  • Cheer the men's basketball team sitting alongside your son or daughter.

SPU Dad's Day is a great chance for you to bond with your SPU daughter or son, meet their friends, get on campus, and have some fun. Enjoy delicious food, breakfast entertainment, and a Seattle Sounders FC game against Colorado Rapids. Watch for more details, including registration information, next month. Come make some memories!

Commencement 2014
Do you have a graduating student? Commencement is Saturday, June 14, 1 p.m., at Seattle's Key Arena. Be sure to check the Commencement 2014 website for the details you'll need for this celebration of scholarship, service, and Christian growth.

Beginning April 9, your graduating student must register and request tickets online for Commencement by following the directions in Banner under the student menu. The free tickets are required for entrance and can be requested only by the graduate. If your student has any issues or concerns associated with registration for Commencement, contact Student Academic Services at 206-281-2031.

Tax Information Is in the Mail
The 2013 1098-T tax forms will be mailed to your student's permanent address. You can also access the information in Banner now, under the Student Menu / Student Account Menu. For more information, visit Student Financial Services’ Educational Tax Benefits web page.

Most Beautiful Campus
The editors at ChristianUniversitiesOnline.org have selected Seattle Pacific University one of The 25 Most Beautiful Christian Colleges in America. The list was compiled as an aid for prospective students looking for a Christian school "where their quest for truth will be enhanced by truly beautiful surroundings." All of the schools included on the list are members or affiliates of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities.

The listing ranks SPU #14 and notes that the University has "some of the oldest trees in all of Seattle," "charming brickwork," and satellite campuses on Blakely Island and Whidbey Island.

Kato

Kato Gives Presentation

Sharleen Kato, professor of family and consumer sciences, gave two presentations at the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) national meeting in Las Vegas. One presentation focused on integrating core curriculum, and one focused on incorporating STEM concepts into teaching life span development.

ACTE members include career and technical educators, administrators, and guidance counselors at the secondary and post-secondary levels. At the conference, the publisher of Goodheart Willcox introduced two new supplementary materials authored by Dr. Kato, including the Instructor's Annotated Workbook and the Workbook for the Lifespan Development textbook released earlier this year.

Ferreiro

Ferreiro's Book Translated Into Chinese
The Twelve Prophets: Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture by Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro was recently translated into Chinese. The book was published by InterVarsity Press in 2003, and has already been translated into Spanish, Italian, Russian, and Korean.

Franz

Franz Presents Paper
Randy Franz, associate professor of management, presented a paper “An Exercise in Theological Imagination: Missing Constructs and Management Implications" at the Christian Business Faculty Association conference in October at Olivet Nazarene University.
